How Many Countries Can a Nigerian Citizen Travel Without a Visa?

According to Henley & Passport Index, there are 26 countries that allow Nigerian passport holders to free entry. This low number of visa free countries for Nigerians ranked the Nigerian passport at 97th place based on Henley’s second quarter of 2020 passport index report.

In addition, there are 20 countries that allow visa on arrival for Nigerian passport holders, making it a total of 46 countries with non-restrictive access for Nigerians.

Visa-Free Countries for Nigerians

Based on Henley Passport Index’s April 2020 report, there is no East Asian country that grants visa free entry for Nigerians.

Visa on Arrival/E-visa for Nigerians

Mongolia

With Mongolia’s biodiversity, it is certainly one of the countries in East Asia worthy of a visit. The good news is that Nigerians can get a visa on arrival. However, we recommend checking your eligibility from the Mongolian embassy in Abuja first before booking a flight just to be on the safe side.

Visa Required for Nigerians

Here are the East Asian countries that Nigerian citizens will need a visa to travel to. We’ve also included the requirements that you need to submit when applying for a visa:

China

Packed with natural wonders, tasty cuisine, and interesting culture, China is one of the most frequented destinations in East Asia. There are two ways to apply for a Chinese visa: online or through the Chinese Visa Application Center. Let’s have a look at the requirements:

Online:

• Hotel reservation
• A passport that is valid for at least 6 months from your departure date and with at least 2 blank pages.
• A credit card or Paypal account to process your payment online

Chinese Visa Application Center:

• Printed application form with your most recent passport photo on a white background attached.
• A passport valid for at least 1 year and at least 2 blank pages.
• Your flight itinerary
• An invitation letter or proof of hotel reservation
• Proof of your legal residence, such as your utility bill, government ID, or driver’s license.

At the embassy’s discretion, you may be granted up to 60 days of stay per entry, depending on the type of visa that you’ll apply for.

Hong Kong – Apply online here.

A melting pot of eastern and western culture, Hong Kong is one of the top economies in Asia. Applying for a Hong Kong visa can be done online. Applicants must submit the following requirements:

• A passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of departure
• Credit card or Paypal to process your payment. 
• Signed health declaration form which is distributed in all Hong Kong-bound flights or signed online

Japan

Japan is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia. Sadly, it isn’t one of the visa free countries for Nigerians. You can still apply for a tourist visa by going to the Japanese Embassy in Abuja. Check out the following requirements:

• A valid passport
• Duly signed application form
• One 45mm x 45mm photo taken within the last 6 months
• Photocopy of flight and reservation slip
• Personal bank statement for the past three months
• Proof of employment
• Introduction from school or employer
• Certificate of incorporation
• Valid company tax clearance certificate
• Your itinerary in Japan

Macau

Famous for its gambling industry, you might want to try your luck in one of the country’s casinos. But before you can do that, you need to first secure a Hong Kong visa. Once your visa to Hong Kong is secured, you can then request an entry permit at the Macau port.

North Korea

Going to North Korea may not seem to be as easy as getting one from other countries, but the process is actually simple. You can submit your application through URI Tours; you can either apply for a group or private and you only need to submit the following requirements:

• A visa application form (online)
• Photocopy of your passport
• Passport photo

After submitting these requirements, you’ll just need to wait for approval. Once your application is approved, pick up your visa from the designated meeting place and enjoy your time in North Korea.

South Korea

Made famous by kimchi and K-pop, Korea is one of the top destinations in East Asia. Nigerians who wish to travel to South Korea must apply directly to the South Korean Embassy near them. There are two South Korean Embassies in Nigeria, one is in Abuja and the other is located in Lagos. You will be asked to submit the following requirements when applying for a South Korean visa:

• Passport valid for six months from the date of arrival
• A copy of the passport
• A passport photo.

Taiwan

Taiwan is a must-visit if you love tech, nature, and everything in between. You can either apply for a Taiwan visa online through a 3rd party website or directly at the Taiwan Visa Application Center located in Lagos. Check out the following requirements you’ll need to submit:

• Passport with a validity of at least 6 months from the arrival date; must have at least two blank pages
• Duly-filled out visa application form
• 2 x 2 photo in white background
• Travel document
• Proof of financial support
• Proof of accommodation
• A copy of your return flight ticket
• Proof of ties with the home country such as employment certificate
• Police report that certifies that you don’t have a criminal record
• Medical insurance
• Documents to confirm the purpose of travel
• Travel itinerary

Applications will be processed within 7-14 days and the visa is valid for up to 90 days.

Southeast Asia

Visa-Free Countries for Nigerians

There is currently no Southeast Asian country that offers visa free entry to citizens of Nigeria.

Visa on Arrival/E-visa for Nigerians

Cambodia

Cambodia is rich in culture and historical sites, it is one of the two nations that allow Nigerians visa on arrival privilege. Here are the requirements that you need to submit when to secure a visa on arrival:

• Your picture
• Your passport personal details scanned
• A scan of the last page of your passport
• A medical certificate stating that you do not have COVID-19 taken not longer than 72 hours before the date of travel

Because there’s no Cambodian Embassy in Nigeria yet, you can inquire at the nearest Cambodian Embassy to your country, or contact them by email.

East Timor

Least frequented, but still an interesting South East Asian spot. Nigerian citizens can get their visa upon arrival. Here are the requirements for getting one:

• Your passport
• Duly signed visa application form

Visa Required for Nigerians

The following Southeast Asian countries require Nigerian citizens to get a visa before entry:

Brunei

One of the major suppliers of oil in South East Asia, Brunei is a rich country with great fascinating spots and culture to experience. Nigerians need to apply for a visa before going to Brunei Darussalam. Here are the requirements you’ll need:

• A passport with at least 1 blank page and validity of at least 6 months from arrival date
• Passport-size photo with white background
• Proof of sufficient funds such as your bank statement
• Proof of onward or return flight tickets
• Proof of purpose of the trip
• All the documents for your next destination if you applied for a transit visa
• Proof of applicant’s ties to the home country, such as verification from your employer.
• Flight booking confirmation

Indonesia

Indonesia is one of the largest island countries in the world. Nigerians who wish to apply for an Indonesian visa can send an email to the Indonesian Embassy in Abuja at kbri.abuja@gmail.com or visit their website.

Laos

Famous for having scenic views and natural wonders, Laos is one of the best destinations in Southeast Asia. To apply for a visa for Laos, you must fulfill the following requirements:

• A passport with at least 2 blank pages and valid for at least 6 months from date of arrival.
• Duly filled-out and signed visa application form.
• Minors will need to have their parents sign the application form.
• 2 x 2 inches photograph in white background.
• Travel document.
• Proof of financial support.
• Proof of accommodation
• Copy of return plane ticket
• Proof of ties to home country
• Must have no criminal record.
• Medical Insurance.
• Documentation confirming the purpose of travel.
• Copy of travel itinerary.

Malaysia

A country blessed with stunning beaches such as Langkawi, Malaysia is easily one of the most popular spots in Asia. The following are required from Nigerian citizens when applying for a Malaysian visa:

• Passport valid for at least six months
• Credit/debit card or PayPal to pay for the fee
• A recently taken passport-size picture
• Digital copy of your passport’s bio page
• Travel itinerary
• Return flight ticket with E-Ticket number
• Proof of accommodation such from hotel or a letter from your host
• If you’re a minor, you should submit a birth certificate

Myanmar

A country known for its beautiful pagodas and historical religious sites, Myanmar has its share of awe-inspiring spots. Here are the requirements for getting your Myanmar visa:

• A passport with at least 6 months validity and at least 2 blank pages
• A copy of your passport’s bio page in color
• A passport-size photo in color taken within the last 3 months
• Proof of hotel reservation
• Proof of flight booking
• Travel itinerary

A Myanmar visa is valid for 90 days from the date issued and it’ll grant you up to 28 days of stay in the country.

Philippines

With more than 7600 islands, there’s a lot for you to explore in the Philippines. Here are the general requirements when applying for a Philippine visa:

• Passport/Travel Document Valid for at least six months from the date of arrival
• Duly Accomplished Visa application forms
• Two passport-size photos
• Proof of bona fide status as tourist or businessman;
• Confirmed tickets for return or onward journey to the next port of destination

Central Asia

Visa-Free Countries for Nigerians

Just like the eastern and southeastern parts of Asia, its central parts do not currently offer visa free entry to holders of Nigerian passports.

Visa on Arrival/E-visa for Nigerians

Kazakhstan

One of the 10 biggest countries in the globe, Kazakhstan is surprisingly not in the priority list of travelers. With its scenic spots and historical features, you may want to see this part of the world, too. Here are the things you’ll need when you apply for an e-visa:

• A copy of your passport with at least 2 blank pages and 3 months of validity from the expiration date of your e-visa.
• A copy of the invitation letter from the tour operator.

Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is where the world’s second-largest alpine lake, Lake Issyk Kul in Asia, is located. It is also one of the countries that have given Nigerian passport holders the option to get an e-visa that makes travel more convenient. Before applying for a visa, check out the following requirements:

• A passport with 1 blank page and is valid for at least 6 months from your visa expiration date.
• A valid email address where your e-visa will be sent.
• Paypal or credit card to pay the processing fee.
• Invitation letter: applicable for people who are traveling to Kyrgyzstan for business reasons.

Tajikistan

Not as famous as other countries in Asia, but Tajikistan is far from being the least. With its mountains, unique cuisine, and culture, you have a lot to experience here. What’s more, is that they offer e-visa or visa on arrival for Nigerians making the application simple and convenient. Here are the documents you’ll be needing:

• Your passport’s personal details scan; your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of your arrival.
• The last page of your passport
• And if applicable, a petition

Tourists cannot extend their stay in Tajikistan, so you should plan your itinerary well.

Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is known to be linked to the historical trade route called the Silk Road. If you want to learn more about this legendary road, you can definitely visit the country. But first, you’ll need to apply for a visa. You’ll also need the following documents to request for an e-visa:

Turkmenistan

Famous for carpet-making, you would want to get your hands on a Turkmenistan carpet as a souvenir. Nigerians need a visa to enter this country. In fact, all tourists regardless of their nationality are required to get a visa. You can apply for a visa at the nearest Turkmenistan Embassy from Nigeria. Georgia

With its several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Georgia is an attractive country to go on a holiday. Nigerians are required to visit the nearest Georgian Embassy to apply for a visa. Here is the list of the requirements to submit:

Iran

Oman

Oman is home to Muscat which is known for its fresh seafood and natural features. Oman doesn’t grant Nigerian citizens a visa free entry or e-visa/visa on arrival at the moment, so you’ll need to contact the nearest Omani Embassy to Nigeria for visa applications.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is home to the holiest Muslim city, Mecca. It is visited by 3 million pilgrims each year. Nigerians who want to apply for a visa will need to do so in person at the Saudi Arabian Embassy and present the following requirements:

• Passport Photo not older than 6 months.
• Passport with at least 2 blank pages and at least 6 months of validity from the date of travel.

Andorra

Armenia

Armenia is one of the oldest producers of wine in the world. Their wines are known to be of high quality, thanks to the fertile soil of Mt. Ararat. Nigeria is among the 63 countries whose nationals can only enter Armenia by invitation only. This means that travelers with either business or foreign affairs purposes will be granted an Armenian visa. But all hope is not lost, because you can still go to Armenia through a tour operator and the tour operator shall take care of your invitation to Armenia.

Belarus

Known for its man-made mountains, accommodating culture, and sugary treats, Belarus is one of the best countries in Europe to experience. To apply for a Belarusian visa, you’ll have to go directly to the Embassy of Belarus in Abuja. Here are some of the requirements you’ll need to submit:

• Passport with at least 2 blank pages and valid for 3 months after your trip.

Croatia

Cyprus

North Macedonia

• The Madagascar Landing Authorization is only for a single entry and valid for up to 30 days.

Burkina Faso

Though considered a country not recommended for tourism because of the many reports of terrorist attacks, generally speaking, Burkina Faso has welcoming locals. Cape Verde

How Many Countries Can an Indian Citizen Travel Without a Visa?

The Indian passport holder can travel to 20 countries without a visa. There are 41 countries that offer a visa on arrival while 137 countries require a visa beforehand. A total of 137 countries require a visa before you are allowed to board the plane from India.

Best time to go

The best time to go to Malawi is between May and October because the climate during this season becomes way colder than between November to April.

Dress Code

The dress code in Malawi is a bit relaxed, but Malawians, in general, are more on the conservative side. As a general rule, make sure to cover up and wear modestly when visiting sacred places. It is totally okay to wear bikinis when you’re on the beach. In Malawi culture, men usually wear pants, and shorts are commonly only used by boys.

Do’s and Don’t’s

Knowing a few things about the local customs and traditions when visiting a foreign country such as Malawi can get you out of trouble. Here’s a couple of do’s and don’t’s that may save you from uncomfortable and awkward situations in the country:

Do’s

• Ask for permission before taking a picture of locals, buildings, private and even public properties.
• Address Malawian men by their last name, especially important people.
• Greet people before actually speaking to them.
• If you are a man and you enter a room with people, you should shake the hands of all men in the room before speaking to them.

Don’ts

• When a local offers you something, e.g., food, gift, etc., it is considered very rude to refuse in the Malawian culture.
• It is illegal to bring pornographic materials in the country.
• Do not discuss pregnancy in public; it is considered as a form of boasting in Malawi.
• Don’t be surprised by men holding hands in public; it is considered normal in Malawi.
• Public display of affection is generally frowned upon.
• Do not place your hands inside your pockets when speaking to someone.
• When someone asks you a favour, do not tell them a straight ‘no’; in Malawi culture, it’s best to say to them the reason why you can’t give them what they’re asking for instead of just telling them ‘no’.

WHAT IS SURINAME EVISA

An evisa is an online process of registering for a temporary travel visa to travel and exit a foreign country, which can only be authorized by the Immigration Department. Application is accessible online.

What is a visa

A visa is an international legal permit proving that the holder is allowed to enter, stay, and leave the country.

What are the visa types

VISA FREE – This means that you do not need to apply for a visa for a certain number of days. Make sure that you look up how many days you can only stay. The immigration officer will stamp your passport with the details of your entry and/or exit. Overstaying your visa can lead to a very serious problem. While some countries will require you to show a hotel booking and a flight ticket exiting their country. For Filipinos, many Southeast Asia, African, Central, and South American countries are visa-free.

VISA ON ARRIVAL (VOA) – Visa on arrival means that you can get the visa once you arrive. Now, visa on arrival can be a little tricky, some visa on arrival can only be received if you enter through a specific border point; via air, land, or sea. So, make sure you check this before you booked a ticket. Visa on arrival must be paid when you enter the immigration control after you land. Make sure that you have US Dollars with you all the time.

EVISA – This type of visa can be done online, they can be free or upon a fee. In some cases, you can apply for this in a matter of days before your arrival while others can take up to weeks. You will also be asked to pay through online and submit your data.

VISA REQUIRED – When a visa is required, you either need to apply on the embassy or through a third party depending on the embassy’s policy. A set of documents will be required to be submitted, this is also the visa that can take up from weeks to months to be processed.

If you think that this will be a lot of hassle, it’s not because the registration process can be done online for a minimal price of just about $8, so it is going to be a convenient process. The good thing is that one registration is good for up to 3 years, so you don’t need to register again if you plan on are travelling to European countries multiple times in a year.

Business

The business invitation letter is a document that indicates that a Russian company is inviting you to Russia, and is a requirement to get a business visa. We recommend processing it through iVisa because it is quick. It will just take them 24 hours to get you your business invitation letter.

Studying

If your purpose for going to Russia is for study, then you’ll need to secure a student visa invitation letter. The initial duration for your student visa is up to 90 days, but the good thing is you can extend this type of visa.

Transit visa

Also, bring enough cash (Malagasy Ariary), there are a few ATMs in the cities. You can exchange some money once you landed on their airports, they offer currency exchange, and dollars are pretty high in exchange.

Language

The primary conversational language spoken day-to-day in Madagascar is Malagasy. However, good news for some travellers who may have some experience with the French language.

A good amount of locals speak French. Take note that Malagasy has little knowledge of the English language. So, it is best to know some of the Malagasy words.

Dress Code

You can opt for dresses, pants, t-shirts, or something modest, and can make you comfortable in the heat. Some women of the eastern African countries generally wear quite conservatively. So, it is best to pack clothes that don’t reveal too much of your skin.

However, you can always wear shorts, bathing suits in camps, lodges, and on the coast of the beach. It is also better to go for long trousers and tops to help you protect from the harsh sunlight and keep you away from the mosquitos.

How to Get Around Madagascar

Getting around in Madagascar has a myriad of ways to travel and commute. It’s either by renting a car, hire a tuk-tuk to get you around town, and some destinations also offer van services.

• Travelling by bus is one way to go from short distances to long distances comfortably, and it doesn’t usually get too crowded.
• If you want to travel by train, rail networks are limited to short lines. The most common train destinations are the Fianarantsoa-Manakara line. Although cancellations and delays are frequent, so always expect the unexpected.
• Taxis are the most common of getting around affordably in cities and large towns. Also, take note that a taxi doesn’t have a meter and rely only on predetermined rates. You should always ask for a price before setting off to prevent overpricing.

Safety In Madagascar

Travelling to Madagascar has always been relatively safe compared to neighbouring African countries. Malagasy are very hospitable and friendly people, but because of the turmoil of the government and the uprising of unemployment.

Beware of petty crimes, avoid walking in the corners of big cities at night to prevent yourself from being mugged. However, it is perfectly safe and no stress as you get out of the capital city.

Dos And Don’ts

Let’s talk first about what you shouldn’t do on your trip to Madagascar. Don’t ever feed the dogs, Madagascar is a developing and poor country, they may find this offensive. Don’t pass to someone without being respectful and polite.

Always pay attention to how you walk on villages, Malagasy find it very irritable if you’re walking as if you own it. Don’t get offended if people stare right at you. It is common for them, especially if you look foreign. If your taking pictures, always be courteous to know some of the photo etiquettes.

For the dos, be careful with your belongings, especially to crowded places like Antananarivo, the capital city of Madagascar. You can keep looking but don’t touch their sacred wood carvings or the Aloalo.

Do bring extra changes alongside with you, especially when planning to shop in the market. And always keep an eye and secure your baggage.
