This pain point is what inspired us to compile a list of visa free countries for Nigerians. We’ve also included countries that allow visa on arrival and those that strictly require a visa before entry. How Many Countries Can a Nigerian Citizen Travel Without a Visa?

According to Henley & Passport Index, there are 26 countries that allow Nigerian passport holders to free entry. This low number of visa free countries for Nigerians ranked the Nigerian passport at 97th place based on Henley’s second quarter of 2020 passport index report.

In addition, there are 20 countries that allow visa on arrival for Nigerian passport holders, making it a total of 46 countries with non-restrictive access for Nigerians.

What Countries Require a Visa for Nigerian Citizens?

First things first, you need to know which countries you need a visa for. There’s a total of 180 non-visa free countries for Nigerians, and 22 of them offer electronic visas. Here’s a list for you:

East Asia

Visa-Free Countries for Nigerians

Based on Henley Passport Index’s April 2020 report, there is no East Asian country that grants visa free entry for Nigerians.

Visa on Arrival/E-visa for Nigerians

Mongolia

With Mongolia’s biodiversity, it is certainly one of the countries in East Asia worthy of a visit. The good news is that Nigerians can get a visa on arrival. However, we recommend checking your eligibility from the Mongolian embassy in Abuja first before booking a flight just to be on the safe side.

Visa Required for Nigerians

Here are the East Asian countries that Nigerian citizens will need a visa to travel to. We’ve also included the requirements that you need to submit when applying for a visa:

China

Packed with natural wonders, tasty cuisine, and interesting culture, China is one of the most frequented destinations in East Asia. There are two ways to apply for a Chinese visa: online or through the Chinese Visa Application Center. Let’s have a look at the requirements:

Online:

• Hotel reservation
• A passport that is valid for at least 6 months from your departure date and with at least 2 blank pages.
• A credit card or Paypal account to process your payment online

Chinese Visa Application Center:

• Printed application form with your most recent passport photo on a white background attached.
• A passport valid for at least 1 year and at least 2 blank pages.
• Your flight itinerary
• An invitation letter or proof of hotel reservation
• Proof of your legal residence, such as your utility bill, government ID, or driver’s license.

At the embassy’s discretion, you may be granted up to 60 days of stay per entry, depending on the type of visa that you’ll apply for.

Hong Kong – Apply online here.

A melting pot of eastern and western culture, Hong Kong is one of the top economies in Asia. Applying for a Hong Kong visa can be done online. Applicants must submit the following requirements:

• A passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of departure
• Credit card or Paypal to process your payment. 
• Signed health declaration form which is distributed in all Hong Kong-bound flights or signed online

Japan

Japan is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia. Sadly, it isn’t one of the visa free countries for Nigerians. You can still apply for a tourist visa by going to the Japanese Embassy in Abuja. Check out the following requirements:

• A valid passport
• Duly signed application form
• One 45mm x 45mm photo taken within the last 6 months
• Photocopy of flight and reservation slip
• Personal bank statement for the past three months
• Proof of employment
• Introduction from school or employer
• Certificate of incorporation
• Valid company tax clearance certificate
• Your itinerary in Japan

Macau

Famous for its gambling industry, you might want to try your luck in one of the country’s casinos. But before you can do that, you need to first secure a Hong Kong visa. Once your visa to Hong Kong is secured, you can then request an entry permit at the Macau port.

North Korea

Going to North Korea may not seem to be as easy as getting one from other countries, but the process is actually simple. You can submit your application through URI Tours; you can either apply for a group or private and you only need to submit the following requirements:

• A visa application form (online)
• Photocopy of your passport
• Passport photo

After submitting these requirements, you’ll just need to wait for approval. Once your application is approved, pick up your visa from the designated meeting place and enjoy your time in North Korea.

South Korea

Made famous by kimchi and K-pop, Korea is one of the top destinations in East Asia. Nigerians who wish to travel to South Korea must apply directly to the South Korean Embassy near them. There are two South Korean Embassies in Nigeria, one is in Abuja and the other is located in Lagos. You will be asked to submit the following requirements when applying for a South Korean visa:

• Passport valid for six months from the date of arrival
• A copy of the passport
• A passport photo.

Taiwan

Taiwan is a must-visit if you love tech, nature, and everything in between. You can either apply for a Taiwan visa online through a 3rd party website or directly at the Taiwan Visa Application Center located in Lagos. Check out the following requirements you’ll need to submit:

• Passport with a validity of at least 6 months from the arrival date; must have at least two blank pages
• Duly-filled out visa application form
• 2 x 2 photo in white background
• Travel document
• Proof of financial support
• Proof of accommodation
• A copy of your return flight ticket
• Proof of ties with the home country such as employment certificate
• Police report that certifies that you don’t have a criminal record
• Medical insurance
• Documents to confirm the purpose of travel
• Travel itinerary

Applications will be processed within 7-14 days and the visa is valid for up to 90 days.

Southeast Asia

Visa-Free Countries for Nigerians

There is currently no Southeast Asian country that offers visa free entry to citizens of Nigeria.

Visa on Arrival/E-visa for Nigerians

Cambodia

Cambodia is rich in culture and historical sites, it is one of the two nations that allow Nigerians visa on arrival privilege. Here are the requirements that you need to submit when to secure a visa on arrival:

• Your picture
• Your passport personal details scanned
• A scan of the last page of your passport
• A medical certificate stating that you do not have COVID-19 taken not longer than 72 hours before the date of travel

Because there’s no Cambodian Embassy in Nigeria yet, you can inquire at the nearest Cambodian Embassy to your country, or contact them by email.

East Timor

Least frequented, but still an interesting South East Asian spot. Nigerian citizens can get their visa upon arrival. Here are the requirements for getting one:

• Your passport
• Duly signed visa application form

Visa Required for Nigerians

The following Southeast Asian countries require Nigerian citizens to get a visa before entry:

Brunei

One of the major suppliers of oil in South East Asia, Brunei is a rich country with great fascinating spots and culture to experience. Nigerians need to apply for a visa before going to Brunei Darussalam. Here are the requirements you’ll need:

• A passport with at least 1 blank page and validity of at least 6 months from arrival date
• Passport-size photo with white background
• Proof of sufficient funds such as your bank statement
• Proof of onward or return flight tickets
• Proof of purpose of the trip
• All the documents for your next destination if you applied for a transit visa
• Proof of applicant’s ties to the home country, such as verification from your employer.
• Flight booking confirmation

Indonesia

Indonesia is one of the largest island countries in the world. Nigerians who wish to apply for an Indonesian visa can send an email to the Indonesian Embassy in Abuja at kbri.abuja@gmail.com or visit their website.

Laos

Famous for having scenic views and natural wonders, Laos is one of the best destinations in Southeast Asia. To apply for a visa for Laos, you must fulfill the following requirements:

• A passport with at least 2 blank pages and valid for at least 6 months from date of arrival.
• Duly filled-out and signed visa application form.
• Minors will need to have their parents sign the application form.
• 2 x 2 inches photograph in white background.
• Travel document.
• Proof of financial support.
• Proof of accommodation
• Copy of return plane ticket
• Proof of ties to home country
• Must have no criminal record.
• Medical Insurance.
• Documentation confirming the purpose of travel.
• Copy of travel itinerary.

Malaysia

A country blessed with stunning beaches such as Langkawi, Malaysia is easily one of the most popular spots in Asia. The following are required from Nigerian citizens when applying for a Malaysian visa:

• Passport valid for at least six months
• Credit/debit card or PayPal to pay for the fee
• A recently taken passport-size picture
• Digital copy of your passport’s bio page
• Travel itinerary
• Return flight ticket with E-Ticket number
• Proof of accommodation such from hotel or a letter from your host
• If you’re a minor, you should submit a birth certificate

Myanmar

A country known for its beautiful pagodas and historical religious sites, Myanmar has its share of awe-inspiring spots. Here are the requirements for getting your Myanmar visa:

• A passport with at least 6 months validity and at least 2 blank pages
• A copy of your passport’s bio page in color
• A passport-size photo in color taken within the last 3 months
• Proof of hotel reservation
• Proof of flight booking
• Travel itinerary

A Myanmar visa is valid for 90 days from the date issued and it’ll grant you up to 28 days of stay in the country.

Philippines

With more than 7600 islands, there’s a lot for you to explore in the Philippines. Here are the general requirements when applying for a Philippine visa:

• Passport/Travel Document Valid for at least six months from the date of arrival
• Duly Accomplished Visa application forms
• Two passport-size photos
• Proof of bona fide status as tourist or businessman;
• Confirmed tickets for return or onward journey to the next port of destination

Home to the Singapore Botanic Garden. The country is also where the famous Statue of Merlion stands. Here’s the list of the requirements when applying for a Singapore visa online:

• A passport valid for 6 months from date of entry
• Health declaration form filled out
• A credit card or Paypal account to pay the processing fee

Ancient Buddhist temples, Muay Thai, and breath-taking beaches are some of the things you should expect in Thailand. You can get your visa application done online with the following requirements:

• A passport valid for 6 months from date of entry
• Duly filled-out health declaration form

Central Asia

Visa-Free Countries for Nigerians

Just like the eastern and southeastern parts of Asia, its central parts do not currently offer visa free entry to holders of Nigerian passports.

Visa on Arrival/E-visa for Nigerians

Kazakhstan

One of the 10 biggest countries in the globe, Kazakhstan is surprisingly not in the priority list of travelers. With its scenic spots and historical features, you may want to see this part of the world, too. Here are the things you’ll need when you apply for an e-visa:

• A copy of your passport with at least 2 blank pages and 3 months of validity from the expiration date of your e-visa.
• A copy of the invitation letter from the tour operator.

Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is where the world’s second-largest alpine lake, Lake Issyk Kul in Asia, is located. It is also one of the countries that have given Nigerian passport holders the option to get an e-visa that makes travel more convenient. Before applying for a visa, check out the following requirements:

• A passport with 1 blank page and is valid for at least 6 months from your visa expiration date.
• A valid email address where your e-visa will be sent.
• Paypal or credit card to pay the processing fee.
• Invitation letter: applicable for people who are traveling to Kyrgyzstan for business reasons.

Tajikistan

Not as famous as other countries in Asia, but Tajikistan is far from being the least. With its mountains, unique cuisine, and culture, you have a lot to experience here. What’s more, is that they offer e-visa or visa on arrival for Nigerians making the application simple and convenient. Here are the documents you’ll be needing:

• Your passport’s personal details scan; your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of your arrival.
• The last page of your passport
• And if applicable, a petition

Tourists cannot extend their stay in Tajikistan, so you should plan your itinerary well.

Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is known to be linked to the historical trade route called the Silk Road. If you want to learn more about this legendary road, you can definitely visit the country. But first, you’ll need to apply for a visa. You’ll also need the following documents to request for an e-visa:

Visa Required for Nigerians

Turkmenistan

Famous for carpet-making, you would want to get your hands on a Turkmenistan carpet as a souvenir. Nigerians need a visa to enter this country. In fact, all tourists regardless of their nationality are required to get a visa. You can apply for a visa at the nearest Turkmenistan Embassy from Nigeria. Here are the requirements that you must submit:

• Passport valid for at least 3 months from the date you enter the country; it must have at least 1 blank page.
• Your bank statement; must be valid for at least 3 months from the date of your entry.
• Duly accomplished application form.
• One recent passport-size photo on white background.
• Travel insurance
• Onward and return ticket.
• Copy of travel itinerary.
• Proof of accommodation.

West Asia/Middle East

Visa-Free Countries for Nigerians

Sadly, there are no visa free countries for Nigerians in West Asia at the moment. But, have a look at the list of countries eligible for visa on arrival or e-visa.

Visa on Arrival/E-visa for Nigerians

Georgia

With its several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Georgia is an attractive country to go on a holiday. Nigerians are required to visit the nearest Georgian Embassy to apply for a visa. Here is the list of the requirements to submit:

• A copy of your passport personal details
• Passport-size photo
• Accommodation details
• Travel dates

In addition, you may be asked to present the following documents as soon as you arrive in Georgia:

• Proof of purpose of travel
• Proof of accommodation
• Proof of sufficient financial means
• Travel and health insurance

Iran

Iran has several outdoor activities waiting for you, such as skiing, desert trekking, and swimming, and these are but some of the few things that will make you hooked to this country. The good thing is that visa on arrival is available to Nigerian passport holders, however, we recommend visiting the nearest Iranian Embassy just to be sure, or apply online. Here are the requirements you’ll need to prepare:

• Your passport
• Travel itinerary.
• Resume or CV.
• Personal digital photo.
• Digital image copy of your passport.

Kuwait

Kuwait is the 5th country that has the largest oil reserve and is famous for camel racing. Although it isn’t one of the visa free countries for Nigerians at the moment, you can apply for an e-visa instead, but we recommend inquiring or emailing the Kuwaiti Embassy in Abuja just to be sure that you’re eligible.

Lebanon

One of the most famous spots of nightlife in the Middle East, Lebanon is an attractive country to explore. Thankfully, the citizens of Nigeria have the privilege of getting a visa on arrival to Lebanon. Below are the requirements when applying for a visa on arrival:

• Duly accomplished application form. 
• A passport valid for 6 months.
• A photocopy of a Labor Card.
• A recently taken passport-size photo. 
• Bank statement as proof of sufficient funds. 
• Proof of a Round Trip Ticket to Lebanon. 
• Proof of hotel reservation with full address.
• A letter from the sponsor stating the purpose of the visit.

Qatar – Apply online here.

Qatar is among the wealthiest countries in the world. It boasts of its many outdoor activities, such as desert excursions, falcon tours, and enjoying its beautiful beaches. Nigerians are eligible for an ETA. Here are the requirements:

• A scan of your passport’s (bio page). It must be valid for at least 6 months from date of entry.
• A passport-sized photo.
• Confirmed airline reservation.
• Proof of accommodation.
• Proof of residence such as utility bill.

The 6th most frequented destinations in the world, Turkey is rich in culture and natural wonders. Nigerians can apply for a Turkish e-visa online. Travelers who will arrive at any Turkish seaports and will only go to seaport cities are not required to get a visa so long as they won’t stay longer than 72 hours.

Azerbaijan

Home to the Burning Mountain or Yanar Dağ, Azerbaijan is certainly one of those countries that you should visit. Unfortunately, it isn’t one of those visa free countries for Nigerians, and you’ll need to go to the nearest Azerbaijan Embassy to Nigeria to apply for a visa. Below are the requirements that you’ll need to fulfill:

• Passport valid for at least 6 months after the return date.
• A completed visa application form.
• A recently taken passport-size picture on white background.
• Proof of hotel reservation.
• Bank statement for the last three months as proof of funds
• Travel insurance.
• Travel itinerary.
• Onward or return ticket.

Oman

Oman is home to Muscat which is known for its fresh seafood and natural features. Oman doesn’t grant Nigerian citizens a visa free entry or e-visa/visa on arrival at the moment, so you’ll need to contact the nearest Omani Embassy to Nigeria for visa applications.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is home to the holiest Muslim city, Mecca. It is visited by 3 million pilgrims each year. Nigerians who want to apply for a visa will need to do so in person at the Saudi Arabian Embassy and present the following requirements:

• Duly accomplished application form.
• Passport Photo not older than 6 months.
• Passport with at least 2 blank pages and at least 6 months of validity from the date of travel.
• Appointment Booking: Appointment booking confirmation with the consulate
• Valid Appointment Letter of Saudi Visa Centre
• Invitation letter from a company, relative, or friend that indicates the purpose of visit and length of stay.

Schengen Area

Visa-Free Countries for Nigerians

European countries that belong to the Schengen Area do not offer visa free access for Nigerians at the moment.

Visa on Arrival/E-visa for Nigerians

Nigerians are eligible to apply for a Schengen Visa. A Schengen Visa is a visa that grants non-Schengen countries access to any countries that are members of the Schengen Agreement. There are currently 26 countries in the Schengen Area which are:

There is currently no non-Schengen European country that offers visa free access to Nigerians. But do check below for the process of obtaining a visa to each and every non-Schengen country in Europe.

If you love wine, there’s probably no other country in Europe to be than Moldova when it comes to wine-making; ordinary households in the country concoct home-made wines. Getting a visa to Moldova is simple because Nigerians are eligible to apply for an e-visa. Here are the requirements:

• Passport Personal Details Scan; the passport must be valid for at least 3 months.
• Cover Letter
• Invitation Letter (if applicable)
• Schengen Visa (if applicable)
• Return Ticket
• Proof of Accommodation
• Bank Statement as a proof of sufficient funds

Visa Required for Nigerians

Albania

Some of the best beaches in the world are located in Albania, so you should definitely visit the country if you have the opportunity to do so. While Nigerian citizens are currently not eligible for an Albanian e-visa, you can still apply for a visa in person to the nearest Albanian embassy, which is situated in Egypt. Here are the documents that you’ll need to prepare before your visit:

• Passport valid for at least 6 months after your departure date from Albania.
• Proof of departure and flight reservation.
• Proof of accommodation.
• Travel medical insurance.
• Introduction letter from employer.
• Proof of social ties such as birth certificate and marriage certificate.
• Property documents
• Bank statement with a record of 6 to 12 months to prove your financial means.
• Two passport photographs.

Andorra

With a land area of just 453 square kilometers (175 square miles), Andorra is one of the smallest countries in the world. What’s great about Andorra is that it doesn’t require its visitors to get a visa if the stay won’t exceed 90 days regardless of their nationality. However, the only way to Andorra is through France or Spain. These countries require a Schengen visa. Please refer to the Schengen visa section of this blog.

Armenia

Armenia is one of the oldest producers of wine in the world. Their wines are known to be of high quality, thanks to the fertile soil of Mt. Ararat. Nigeria is among the 63 countries whose nationals can only enter Armenia by invitation only. This means that travelers with either business or foreign affairs purposes will be granted an Armenian visa. But all hope is not lost, because you can still go to Armenia through a tour operator and the tour operator shall take care of your invitation to Armenia.

Belarus

Known for its man-made mountains, accommodating culture, and sugary treats, Belarus is one of the best countries in Europe to experience. To apply for a Belarusian visa, you’ll have to go directly to the Embassy of Belarus in Abuja. Here are some of the requirements you’ll need to submit:

• Passport with at least 2 blank pages and valid for 3 months after your trip.
• Visa documents, such as an invitation from the tour operator, contract with the travel agency, and proof of prepayment.
• Duly accomplished application form.
• High-quality passport-size photo taken not longer than 6 months before your application.
• Medical insurance.
• Last 6 months bank statement.
• Paid round trip ticket
