The Mekong River is Stunning

The Mekong river has been the home of a lot of civilizations that have left their cultural marks over the years. A great example is the Chau Doc, a floating market where people hang their wares on long bamboo poles in boats. If you’re looking for something specific, you can see it from far away. The Breathing Lake

The Tonle Sap lake isn’t just Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake, but it’s also a natural phenomenon like no other. For most of the year, you have the Mekong river that flows southwards, from the Tibetan highlands. When this is happening, the Tonle Sap water empties into it. But from May to October, the monsoon winds from the southwest bring increased rainfall, and the Mekong starts to swell. By June, the water of the river has risen to a level where it forces the Tonle Sap river to flow backwards, filling the lake back up with water.

This means that the river is basically the only river in the world that reverses its direction twice per year. It is these currents that the Khmer made use of in order to transport stones that were needed to build temples and monuments – the Angkor Wat. Come November, there isn’t that much pressure on the Mekong river, and the Tonle Sap river reverses its course once again. This is when you have Phnom Penh’s Water Festival, which lasts for three days.

How much of a difference does this make to the lake? Well, given that the Tonle Sap lake is its only outlet, the surface area grows, making the lake four times its size. It goes from 1,050 square miles to over 4,500 square miles at its peak. And it’s during this period that the Tonle Sap is Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake.

The Floating Villages of the Tonle Sap Lake

The breathing lake itself is a phenomenon attractive to tourists. The sheer size of the life-giving waters of Mekong and Tonle Sap offers a lot of exciting experiences to tourists and a chance for them to immerse completely in the true Cambodian lifestyle and culture. The best way to witness all these is by paying a visit to some of the so-called floating villages on the Tonle Sap lake.

As mentioned before, these waters are the source of life and wealth and many Cambodians decided to not only live near the water but in the water. To achieve this, they have constructed stilt houses that float just above the water and form communities of small floating villages. When the water level rises these houses look like they are literally floating just above the water and during the dry season when the water levels are low the giant stilts are visible and people use ladders to get down in the water.

Among the famous floating villages that can be visited by tourists, as being easier to approach are Prek Toal, Kampong Phluk, Chong Kneas, and Kampong Khleang. Visiting some of these villages allows tourists to witness the daily life on the water. There are floating restaurants in some of the villages and small shops. In some of the villages, unfortunately, poverty can also be witnessed. Scams performed on tourists and children beggars are common. However, one can support the local communities by paying for a small boat tour around the village and shop for souvenirs and food at the village’s shops and restaurants.

You’ll be surprised by how many motorcyclists, whether foreigner or local who relies on a motorbike in Vietnam as a means of daily transportation in running errands and travelling.

You can buy a motorbike for $280-$450 (buying in the south can be pricier) the repair costs between $1-$10 depending on the problem or even more.

How long will it take if riding through Sapa

It takes 2-4 days to experience the nature view of Sapa fully. It is located in the northern district of Vietnam. The terrain overlooks terraced golden rice fields and majestic mountains.

Passing through the Hai Van Pass

About 6-8 hours depending on how many stops you will do. You can also spend a night in Da Nang and continue the trip to Hoi An or to Hue (depending on where you’re coming from) the next day.

Food

Around $5-$8 for budget meals good for three times a day. Most hostels and hotels offer free breakfast. While there is a lot of convenience store in the big cities which offers a quick meal and snack.

Travel time in a motorbike

3 weeks, from north to south of Vietnam or vice versa. If you don’t have the time, you can also get to the central of Vietnam and take an international or domestic flight from there.

You can buy $6 for full motorbike tanks that has the capacity of 7 litres. Average distance you can go to is about 150km/day or a maximum of 6 hours a day. 

Rickshaw Run India

One of the great travel adventures in India is the Rickshaw Run. Indians have been travelling across India three times a year with various routes driving a rickshaw – a vehicle with a very tiny engine.

The event began on December 2006; the first route travelled was Ernakulam Kochi to Darjeeling. Rickshaw run is commonly traversing with 3000 km with just a rickshaw. The rickshaw doesn’t have the capabilities to withstand the long distance.

Along the way, you’ll tremble in the ground, get stuck, breakdown, and overheat in multiple times. This is the part where Rickshaw Run gets exciting, and adventurous for such, getting lost midway has definite possibilities.

Myanmar, home of more than 100 ethnic groups, in the region is an ancient city recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Expect temples and infrastructure which resemblance of old civilization in Bagan. A town built by kings in late 1050-1290.

There are about 2200 temples today, and getting over in feet is a fierce battle, locals suggest to rent up an E-bike instead as a means of travelling. One characteristic that keeps on attracting the most tourists in Bagan is the perfect geographical location in its view over sunrise.

Go in a group if you’re catching the sunrise because the map that your receptionist will hand is not accurate (there are no post lamps in Bagan), there is a big chance that you will get lost in the dark and miss the sunrise

Visiting Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan

Memories will always hunt Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. The first-ever atomic bomb (little boy) was dropped and killed thousands of innocent people’s lives. Today, locals and tourists are always free and welcome to commemorate the death of its people in Peace Memorial Park. 

You can also walk around and learn more about the melancholic history in the solemn Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. Like the City of Bagan, in 1996, Hiroshima was also declared as a UNESCO World Heritage.

After the bombings, Japanese starts converting its lands solely for parks and memorialize the aftermaths of this tragic bombings.

You can see stone temples across jungles and monuments of the fallen heroes that have been killed by a communist party that took power in the country in the year 1975. Khmer Rouge appeals to be responsible for the death of more than two million Cambodians.

Good ‘ol Great Wall of China

In line with the Chinese defence, dynasties fortified a massive wall and high mountain watch towers in protecting them from raids following invasions. Ahh Bali! My heart has been set on this beautiful island ever since. The idea of cycling in the rice fields, the crystal blue water of its beaches, being greeted by the warm-hearted Balinese people, and the possibility of me too finding love in Bali, made me yearn to go to this mesmerising island.

An eight-day trip and some 600 dollars to spend. I planned the Bali trip on my own. No external help, no agents. And my Bali trip was a hit. At least in my own eyes. I had a blast in minimal money to spend and managed to see the most of Bali.

So, how did I do it?

I decided on a budget

This is the first thing I did as soon as I decided to go to Bali. I told myself I would not be spending more than 600 dollars on this trip. The air tickets itself cost me some $370. So, I left the rest of £230 for my accommodation and food.

Bali is a little cheap in the sense that the value of its currency is very low. 1 dollar is 13,841 Indonesian Rupiah. A lot, right?

Not to ignore the fact that the denomination of their currency notes is very high. They have a 100,000 rupiah note too. But yes, Bali is cheap. So sticking to your budget is not tough.

​I travelled light

I packed very little stuff for my trip. Your fun gets spoiled if you take too much luggage with you. You end up packing and lifting weight most of the time.

So, I kept 2 party dresses, 2 beach dresses, 2 pairs of shorts and tees, my Danner tactical boots and a couple of flip flops for my footwear and clothing quota. That’s all!

This also allowed me to travel and commute between cities and destinations on a scooter. And, you don’t have to worry much about your stuff getting lost or stolen.

I decided to do the bookings on my own

I didn’t hire an agent to make the bookings for me. First, they charge you a lot. Second, they make reservations for expensive and unnecessarily hyped places, which I absolutely didn’t want.

Doing the bookings over the counter or look them up online and with a little research about the best and cheapest option available saves you a lot of money.

So, I decided to do all the bookings myself, from air tickets to accommodation to tours. I booked other packages like a cycling tour, fast boat, and water sports while being in Bali.

I assure you it is not tough. Just a little bit of research on the internet and talking to friends who have been to Bali.

I booked only homestays and guest houses

Personally, I’m not too fond of hotels. They are sometimes too expensive and commercialised and ended up having no personal touch or essence of that place. This is the reason I prefer homestays over hotels.

This helps me to stay close with the locals, observe their daily routine, and eat the local cuisine. I also get to feel the true essence of that place, and it is always so lovely to get a chance to speak to the local people and get to know them.

I rented a scooter

The first thing I did after checking in my homestay was to ask for places I could get a scooter on rent. Riding one in Bali is way cheaper than booking taxis. You can rent a scooter for as little as 4 dollars a day, and the fuel doesn’t cost you much.

Plus, ‘Scooter is Bali’s lifeline’, everyone is riding a scooter in Bali. It’s so much fun!

I avoided crowded places

I didn’t go to crowded beaches and restaurants. I absolutely hate waiting for tables or in queues or going to littered or overcrowded beaches. Also, you end up not enjoying the sport because of the presence of too many people around. And, quite often, there is too much noise even to feel the place.

There are some beaches in Bali, like Pandawa Beach, which do not see many tourists. Do visit these. And, avoid beaches like Kuta Beach in Kuta, which are crowded and dirty.

So, by avoiding crowded places, not only did I have fun, I saved time too.

I didn’t drink inside the pubs

If you like to party hard, you know how much it hurts when the party expense burns a hole in the pocket. So, I decided to do this!

Girls entry is generally free inside the pubs, but the alcohol very expensive, so I always had a beer outside the pubs, and then went inside for parties. This allowed me to have fun in the famous pubs without having to spend a lot of alcohol.

Final Words

Guys, Bali is gorgeous and serene. You leave a piece of yourself here, and something stays with you forever. YOU ARE HEALED! I am sure I am convincing enough to make you long to go to Bali too.

Just make sure not to do anything that hurts their sentiments or poses a threat to the environment. Be a responsible tourist! Considering they are experiencing a water crisis in Bali.

So, this is how I planned a fantastic trip to Bali, all by myself. And, proudly so!​

What is a visa

A visa is an international legal permit proving that the holder is allowed to enter, stay, and leave the country.

Some countries will require you to hold or apply for a visa before you enter their country, while there are countries that they don’t ask you to obtain one. All you need to do is arrive and leave in time to avoid any problems in the future.

What are the visa types

 These are the following visa types or tag used for visas:

VISA FREE – This means that you do not need to apply for a visa for a certain number of days. Make sure that you look up how many days you can only stay. The immigration officer will stamp your passport with the details of your entry and/or exit. Overstaying your visa can lead to a very serious problem. While some countries will require you to show a hotel booking and a flight ticket exiting their country. For Filipinos, many Southeast Asia, African, Central, and South American countries are visa-free.

VISA ON ARRIVAL (VOA) – Visa on arrival means that you can get the visa once you arrive. Now, visa on arrival can be a little tricky, some visa on arrival can only be received if you enter through a specific border point; via air, land, or sea. So, make sure you check this before you booked a ticket. Visa on arrival must be paid when you enter the immigration control after you land. Make sure that you have US Dollars with you all the time.

EVISA – This type of visa can be done online, they can be free or upon a fee. In some cases, you can apply for this in a matter of days before your arrival while others can take up to weeks. You will also be asked to pay through online and submit your data.

VISA REQUIRED – When a visa is required, you either need to apply on the embassy or through a third party depending on the embassy’s policy. A set of documents will be required to be submitted, this is also the visa that can take up from weeks to months to be processed.

SEASONS IN THE PHILIPPINES

The best time to visit the Philippines depends on your preferred weather. Because the Philippines is a tropical country, there are only two seasons here: the dry and the wet season. Let’s explore the pros and cons of the hot and cold seasons in the Philippines below.

When is summer in the Philippines

The period when it is the hottest in the Philippines is what’s considered as the country’s “summer” season. It is also the most touristy period in the country, thanks to its stunning beaches.

However, the peak season is also the season when the prices are high, and the crowd of people is overwhelming, which isn’t the best time to visit the Philippines, in my opinion. But if you want to experience the Philippines at its hottest and its busiest, then, I recommend you visit the country during summer.

• Months: March-May
• Average temperature: 38 °C (100.4 °F)

When is the rainy season/typhoon season in the Philippines

The rainy season in the Philippines is less popular with tourists because not so many people enjoy rain showers. This is also the “Typhoon season” for this country.

Of course, the rainy season has its own appeal, so if you are a pluviophile and you want to enjoy lower prices in general, then this may be the best time to travel to the Philippines.

But then it isn’t advisable to hike the Philippine mountains during this season as the trails can be muddy and slippery, therefore, messy at the very least, and very dangerous. While flights, bus schedules, and ferries can be cancelled at the peak of the typhoon season for safety issues.

• Average temperature: 27.7°C (82°F)

WHEN IS THE PEAK SEASON IN THE PHILIPPINES

Different places in the Philippines have their own peak and low season. For example, Baguio’s peak season is between the months of December to February, and Baler’s peak season is between March and June.

Generally speaking, when thinking of when to travel to the Philippines, the peak season is to be avoided. But then again, the important festivals are usually happening during the peak season, so the decision is up to you; do you want to experience the festive and extroverted side of the Philippines or its slower and introverted side?

December is generally the busiest month in the Philippines. Because the majority of Filipino people’s most celebrated holiday is the Christmas season, expect the volume of traffic to be heavier, and the crowd to be denser.

The accommodation prices and flights are also higher at this time of the year. The good thing about this season is that the temperature is much colder, the locals are in much happier spirit, and you get to enjoy the Christmas lights almost everywhere in the country!

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO TRAVEL TO THE PHILIPPINES

It is best to go to the Philippines when it isn’t too hot. And when the airfare and the cost of living, in general, are not that high.

That being said, I personally think that the best time to go to the Philippines is between the end of May until early of August then again from the end of October until mid of December.

When there aren’t that many tourists, and the weather is a bit more accommodating (however, can be unpredictable), which makes a tourist’s stay as comfortable as it can be.

But, then again, there are many exciting events between December until April that make braving through the country’s slight inconveniences worth it, such as the Panagbenga Festival in Baguio City and the world-famous Penitence event during the Holy Week.

If you want to visit the islands

If you are after sunbathing, surfing, water activities, island hopping, and other trips that require a sunny day, you would want to come between December until the end of May.

During these months, there is a very little chance for any rain or typhoon while the temperature is at its best and the locals are also on their holiday spirit.

If you want to surf, make sure to read about the surfing spots before coming. Not all surfing places in the Philippines have the best waves at the same time.

Best time for hiking

For hikers, you want to come between November to March and then again from May until July. These times offer better temperature and drier weather. From April to May, it can be boiling and uncomfortable to hike while August until October is the high season for the typhoon.

Mountains are most likely to be closed for safety reasons. Many amazing mountains to hike are located in the north of the Philippines.

To visit during the Christmas holidays and New Years

If you ask any Filipino, Christmas is the best time to be in the Philippines. The temperature is more refreshing, and everyone is remarkably happier.

Filipinos celebrate Christmas and the New Year’s even like no one else in the world. The traditions come out, the streets are full of bright lights, while parties are non-stop wherever you go.

Just remember that during these times, the prices are higher and places to stay are often fully-booked a few months in advance.

Travel during the Holy Week

While Holy Week or Easter is another massive holiday in the Philippines. The students are on break from school while many offices and business are shut down. The locals go home to their provinces to visit their families.

The celebration takes four days, however, as a tourist, you will experience that the entire week is the busiest time for islands and provinces in the Philippines. At the same time, Metro Manila will be almost empty during this time.

Again this is a high season, meaning accommodations and transportation will be fully booked and the prices are higher.

Participate with the local festivals

A lot of local festivals in the Philippines which are really amazing to join and experiences are happening between December until May.

JAPAN VISA

For American and British citizens, a Japan Visa is not required if staying for less than 90 days. But passports should be valid during the whole period of stay in Japan, and a return or onward ticket should be presented upon entry.

Visiting different places in Japan can be surprisingly easy. They have a fantastic transportation system, and its islands are well connected by ferries, bus services, and railways. You may want a refreshing onsen bath and explore authentic shrines.

There are also temples and castles to explore as you walk the busy Shibuya crossing. Surely, you are amazed at what Japan’s cities/towns have to offer.

Tokyo

As Japan’s capital, Tokyo is a mix of modernization and tradition. Here you can find busy shopping districts, skyscrapers, top-rated restaurants, entertainment centres as well as historical landmarks, museums, temples and beautiful landscapes.

You may also have day trips to popular destinations nearby such as Kamakura and Nikko. Both places have temples and shrines, but Kamakura has the beach while Nikko is home to hot springs, lakes, and waterfalls.

Day trips to Hakone from Tokyo are also available, and this is one of the best spots to view Mt. Fuji.

You may also want to visit the very famous Asahi Beer Factory. It is home to museums, shrines, and well-maintained parks. And the beautiful Nagoya Castle is one of its prominent landmarks.

Best Time to Visit Phuket

• Majority of tourists buy lots of clothes, bags, shirts, pants, etc. at the Jungceylon Shopping Mall because it is affordable. Unfortunately, the goods claimed to be branded are NOT. It is not a place to do bulk shopping, but choose some of the funky branded apparel for your wardrobe. Do bulk shopping in Bangkok!
• Phuket offers a plethora of services, including massage, pedicure, manicure, massage, and hairstyling at affordable prices. You can pamper yourself with a Thai massage!
• Thailand is popular for its authentic food. However, you’ll find international cuisine served more than the local dishes in the restaurants. If you are keen on trying some traditional Thai food like Pad Thai, Tom Yam, Green Curry, or Thai Pancake, then street stalls are placed to feed your hungry soul. 
• Phuket is a travellers’ heaven, so you will find all kinds of accommodations around suitable for every budget ranging from backpackers to luxurious resorts. 
• Be cautious about your expectations to enjoy the popular nightlife. You will be amazed to read the menu, ‘Buy a drink and watch the show for free’. You’ll need to pay for 45 to 100 USD for the drinks, not in Thai Baht, so drink wisely.

Which Beaches to Visit

The popular Patong Beach

It is the very first place travellers flock to as soon as they land on the island. Patong beach is always crowded and bustling. At night, the area turns into a party hub. It is a hot and happening place, but someone looking to relax and stretch needs to visit Karon and Kata beaches.

Both are a short drive from the Paton beach. The sand is white, water is clean, and the environment is laid-back. These peaceful beaches allow travellers to relax and enjoy the remarkable sunset on the horizon. Kata beach bars are perfect for a beautiful evening.

Unbeaten path of Laem Ka Beach

It is a kind of private beach and hidden gem with stunning offshore island views. The sparkling blue water is crystal clear and perfect for some refreshing splash! It is a little remote from the central region with an ideal backdrop.

Big Buddha and Wat Chalong

Phuket’s most famous landmark is the 45-meter massive statue of Buddha. This white marble figurine is perched on top of a hill, which offers stunning views of the Chalong Bay. For serene and prayer offerings, many travellers visit Wat Chalong, the most important and colourful worship place.

Wat Khao Rang

This temple hosts many golden Buddha figurines and other Hindu Gods. The incredible temple Wat Khao Rang was constructed by Luang Pu Supha, a monk. He is stated to be the world’s oldest man. A massive statue guards the entrance and a dragon slides down its stairway.

For those who are very outdoorsy, don’t worry, there are also places you can visit that will bring you closer to nature while travelling in Phuket. Here are some places to add on your itinerary:

Karon viewpoint

Although this point is called Karon, it is in Kata. On a clear-day, travellers can get picture-perfect ocean views and the three beautiful beaches.

Promthep Cape

Nature lovers can experience the majestic sunset from this viewpoint. The Nai Harn beach and several offshore islands can be seen from this point. Evenings are crowded here as many people take a hike towards the southernmost point. If you too want to join them, then it is recommended to wear comfortable hiking shoes.

Bang Pae waterfall

The waterfall has a steady flow of milky white water, which is perfect for enjoying a swim after a memorable hiking experience across the scenic beauty.

$500 or less, I managed to fly from Denmark to Hanoi for $350 for one-way ticket most of the time, it’s cheaper if you get a return flight. Most affordable flights are leaving from Helsinki, London, Copenhagen, Warsaw. Turkey, Rome, Frankfurt, and Paris in Europe, make sure to check the flights from big cities or capital of the country to find the best flight. Check for cheap flights.

Hostels​

Meal​​​​

$1-3 from street food to a casual restaurant or fast-food chains. There is also convenient stores like VinMart, Family Mart, and Circle K that offers ready to eat meals for great prices.

Transportation

$12 for an 8-hour bus ride. Local buses around the city are around $0.20 but the traffic is pretty bad, you can take a motorbike taxi for as cheap as $.50. Maybe motorbiking in Vietnam sounds appealing to you as well.

Tours​

CAMBODIA TRAVEL COST

The beautiful Angkor Wat, the markets in Battambang, the beach in Koh Rong, and not to mention the happy pizza (Oops!). Whatever your reason is, Cambodia is definitely worth a visit. With its affordable food, hostels, and beers, there is no excuse not to travel here anytime soon.

The flight are about $600 or more, it’s rare to find a direct cheap flight to Cambodia, the best is to fly to Bangkok and then take a bus for $12 to Cambodia. Check for cheap flights

THAILAND BUDGET COST

Wait, what?! I thought Thailand is supposed to be expensive? Well, that’s quite accurate, unless you budget and plan well. Perhaps turn your focus up in the north instead of the islands? Both of us know that we have more than enough islands in the Philippines.

Thailand is one of the main destinations in Southeast Asia, because of the growing number of backpackers here, Thailand offers affordable hostels and food to its travellers. If you are going alone (because your friends are “puro drawing”) no need to worry, you will meet heaps of solo travellers here.

Daily Budget

If you stay out of the restaurants and private rooms, $20-$35 will be enough for your daily budget. To be honest, you could even spend less if you will look harder for cheaper food and accommodation. Consider putting your feet to use instead of taking a taxi or tuk-tuks. Chiang Mai should definitely be on your list because it’s somehow cheap than Bangkok and its nature is a must explore.

Flight Tickets

Flying from major airports in Europe to Bangkok, there are flights from $350. While from North America, flights is not so cheap, they start at $800 if you get lucky. Many travellers from this part of the world take a flight to Europe then flight to Southeast Asia.

If you are located either in Australia or New Zealand, there are flights starting at $600 from budget airlines. Every now and then, look out for a promo for cheap flights well.

Hostels​

For as cheap as $5-$8 for dorm beds and $10-12 for private rooms. Check Hostels in Thailand.

Meal

$1-$4 for street food and casual restaurants or fast-food chains. Look out for those local restaurants on the side streets, they are the affordable ones.

Transportation

Taking buses around Bangkok should be around $0.50 while taking taxis, the fair starts at $1.5. Motor taxis and tuk-tuks are around $1 as well for a short ride. Bangkok also has a metro, they are cheaper than taxis for sure, however, they don’t cover many areas of the city yet.

India is a huge country, most travellers need more than three months to have a good grip on this country. Most Indians also speak English, which made it a lot easier to travel around.

A backpacker could easily survive in India with $20-35 a day excluded the tours. While a backpacker with a great talent for budgeting can survive with $18.

Remember to look for flights leaving the major cities from your home country and landing in a major city in India.

Always wanted to see the famous Twin Tower in Kuala Lumpur? Or the vibrant city of Malacca? Even though Malaysia is not very cheap compared to other destinations below, it is possible to travel cheaply. Planning in advance, you can find cheap hostels and flight tickets.

Affordable meals can be found in the local eateries and street food stalls as well. You should also keep in mind that Kuala Lumpur can be pricey but doesn’t mean the entire country is.

Malaysia is actually a popular transit hub to Southeast Asia, there are direct flights from Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and sometimes even from North America.

However, these direct flights are not the cheapest, which is about $1,000 and up. While flights with a connection can be as cheap as $700.
