Washington D.C. is a popular tourist destination, and with good reason. It’s the capital of the U.S. and it’s always buzzing with excitement. More than any U.S. destination, save for New York City, it’s packed with attractions to see. Places like the White House, U.S. Capitol Building, and the Lincoln Memorial attract millions of tourists every year. As exciting as all of this is, travelers should also know that there are some things you can’t do in D.C. Here are things you can’t do in Washington D.C.

1. You can’t drink openly in public

If your drink has alcohol in it, you are not allowed to drink it in public places. Public places include any street, sidewalk, alley, park, or parking area. Yes, you can order a drink at a restaurant, bar and even a golf course, but you must consume the drink before leaving the place. If are you are caught by a police officer consuming alcohol in public, you will be charged with possession of open container of alcohol and issued a misdemeanor offense.

2. “Open carry” is not allowed

“Open carry” is the practice of openly walking around with firearms in public (like the Wild Wild West). While open carry is legal in some places in the U.S. (like Nevada), it is strictly illegal in D.C. Anyone who wishes to carry a gun must be at least 21 years old and must get a concealed carry license in D.C.

3. You can’t smoke in any enclosed public spaces

Washington D.C. is strict when it comes to smoking, and this is for the benefit of the public health. Smoking is banned in enclosed public spaces including bars and restaurants. While this will inconvenience some, Prilla reports that Washington has embraced nicotine pouches, which are a legal alternative to smoking. With brands like ZYN, ROGUE, and VELO being available for purchase online, smokers can easily satisfy their nicotine cravings. This will help some who would otherwise find it hard not to smoke while visiting D.C.

4. You can’t swim in the reflecting pool on the National Mall

As tempting as it may be, swimming or wading has never been allowed in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. It is the centerpiece of D.C.’s National Mall, boasting a length of more than one-third of a mile and over two feet deep in some areas. Millions of people visit the pool every year, especially for photo opportunities. If people get too close to the water, park authorities will warn them not to swim or wade in it. After all, it is a national monument.

5.You can’t see all the museums in one day

There are over 70 museums in D.C., with 21 Smithsonian museums and galleries and the National Zoo. So, it is nearly impossible to see all of them in one day. What you can do is plan an itinerary of what museums and places you would like to visit so that you can make the most of your trip. You can also join a guided tour that will take you around, show you important details and explain the rich history behind each marvel.

Washington D.C. is an amazing place to visit. You will want to have the best time you can have, and one way is to not get into trouble while you are there. Therefore, the details listed here are FYI: know before you go. But, with so many places to go, and so little time, it would be best to plan ahead for this trip.

If you're looking to get away from it all, but on a budget, consider taking a kayak trip.

If you’re looking to get away from it all, but on a budget, consider taking a kayak trip. Kayaks are far more affordable than hiking or camping equipment, and just as easy to use. With the proper training and experience, all you’ve got to do is sit down inside the kayak and start paddling. Here are the top places to go kayaking in the United States.

Michigan

Michigan is a top kayaking destination if you want to go somewhere with a wide variety of landscapes. While most people think of Michigan in terms of its Great Lakes shoreline, the state also has coastal areas, small islands, and even inland rivers. The great thing about paddling along Lake Michigan is that there are so many options where you can stop along the way. And as the folks at https://www.watersportswhiz.com/ say whether you like paddling in small lakes or adventures, Michigan has a place for you. Some ideal spots for kayaking include Wilderness State Park, where there can be as many as 1,500 freshwater islands and coastal areas, Bay Furnace Park in the Upper Peninsula, and Platte River Point Campground near Traverse City.

New Jersey

If you’re looking for a quiet place to go kayaking with little chance of seeing many people, head on down to New Jersey’s Delaware Bay. This bay hugs New Jersey’s shoreline from Cape May Point to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The Delaware Bay has been called “the most underrated boating destination in America” by those who know it best, and kayaking is a great way to explore this area at your own pace.

Other good spots for kayaking include the C&D Canal towpath, West Creek on the Great Egg Harbor River, and on your way out to the bay, check out the New Jersey Pinelands.

Washington

Washington is a state that has plenty to offer paddlers of all experience levels, including those who are looking for something quick and easy. The state capital is Olympia, which offers nice secluded areas to paddle in.

You can also kayak along the Kitsap Peninsula, which is a popular place for kayakers due to all of its inlets and bays. There are a number of islands in the area where you can stop for a picnic or even spend the night if you’re really into your kayaking trip. The state’s south coast is another great place to kayak, where you can explore some of the best wildlife viewing sites in the state. Visit places like Tokeland and Westport for a change from typical paddling trips.

Wisconsin

In Wisconsin, one of the most popular places to go kayaking is along the Door Peninsula. The peninsula’s location makes it a great place to go kayaking and it’s even part of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail.

Another good spot for kayaking is along the Wolf River, which has many quiet coves and bays that are ideal for those who want to get away from everything.

North Carolina

North Carolina is another great spot for those who prefer kayaking on the water as opposed to rocks and rivers. Since North Carolina is a coastal state, you can explore some of the most beautiful parts of the Atlantic coast by kayak, including barrier islands and lighthouses.

Hands down one of the best places to go kayaking in North Carolina is Cape Lookout National Seashore. The best way to get there is by boat so that you don’t have to kayak the whole distance. There are many different coves and islands in this area that you can explore along your route.

Utah

One of Utah’s most popular paddling destinations is Elephant Butte Lake State Park in the southwestern part of the state. You can do some kayaking or canoeing along with fishing, swimming and even camping if you want to make a full weekend out of it. The lake provides great views no matter where you are on its waters.

Another great spot for kayaking is Bear Lake, which is the largest natural freshwater lake in the state and it’s right next to a popular ski resort so you can even go down to take a look at the area after you’re done with your kayak trip.

There are plenty of great places for kayaking all over the US, including most coastal areas which can be combined with some great wildlife spotting opportunities. Kayaking is worth it if you want to do something that’s truly unique and helps you appreciate the natural beauty of the country in a deeper way.

Ever since COVID-19 hit the world, traveling internationally has had additional procedural restrictions.

Ever since COVID-19 hit the world, traveling internationally has had additional procedural restrictions. The requirements and policies for air travel have been changing with the continuous rise in cases. Currently, since most countries are making an effort to vaccinate their populations, air travel is now slowly picking up pace as it has become increasingly safe to travel again. However, the UK and the US have made additional changes to their restrictions.

Here are 6 important things you need to know before traveling to or from the UK/US.

Checking Travel Advice

It’s better to keep yourself updated with the latest information and the recent changes being made to restrictions on travel. Whether you’re visiting the US or the UK or flying back from a trip, it’s essential to check and follow foreign travel advice. This is because it can help you stay safe and plan for your trip accordingly. Since there are more risks involved with traveling internationally, it’s crucial to follow the procedures of the airline as well as that of your destination.

Covid Test

As per the instructions given in both countries, passengers are required to show a negative COVID-19 test result before boarding the flight. You’ll either need to get the test done one day or three days before travel, depending on whether you’re vaccinated or not. Especially if you have any of the three covid symptoms, like temperature, cough, or loss of sense of taste and smell, getting a PCR test done is highly necessary. This also applies to people who have been in close contact with an infected individual or with someone who’s showing symptoms of being infected.

Lateral Flow Test

If you don’t have any symptoms of coronavirus and are fully vaccinated, you can take a lateral flow test (LFT) instead of a PCR test. These tests are cheaper in comparison and can be purchased from any private provider. To be allowed to travel, passengers are required to show images of their antigen test UK to their private provider, and if the result turns out to be positive, they need to take a PCR test. If you’ve already bought a PCR test, you don’t need to buy the LFT one. The result needs to be sent and verified by the company they purchased the test from.

Proving Vaccination Status

Passengers who have had their complete dosage of vaccination against COVID-19 are allowed to travel to the US and UK, provided that at least 14 days have passed since the last dosage was administered. However, wherever you decide to get the vaccination, it is essential that they meet the conditions for travel in that country. The vaccine administered should either be from UK/US vaccination programs or from other international vaccination programs, with proof of vaccination for traveling overseas. It is important that you keep all proof of vaccinations like vaccination certificates along with other travel documents with you while traveling internationally.

Children’s Safety

Children are allowed to travel to the US/UK under certain conditions. Firstly, all children below the age of 4 can travel even if they are not vaccinated and do not need to be quarantined upon arrival. For children between the ages of 5 and 17 who are traveling from countries with approved proof of vaccination list, only a COVID-19 test a day or two before arrival is required. For other countries, COVID tests are required before traveling, on the day or before the second day of arrival, on the eighth day after arrival, and quarantine for 10 days at the place of stay in the US/UK.

After Arrival in the US/UK

Once you do return to your place of stay, it is important for you to realize that air travel significantly increases your chances of being exposed to the virus. It is recommended for you to quarantine for at least 7 days, even if your COVID test result is negative, as the test result can be a false negative. If, however, you decide to not take the COVID test, you should quarantine for 10-15 days and look out for symptoms of COVID. If your test comes back positive, immediately isolate yourself from others and get proper treatment from your healthcare provider to manage symptoms.

As life slowly moves back to normal after the COVID pandemic, air travel is now picking up pace again after the majority of the counties are vaccinating their populations against this disease. It is, therefore, absolutely necessary to ensure complete vaccination as well as adherence to precautions for traveling safely.

The year’s nearly over, which means that winter’s upon us. If you’re looking for something exciting to do this winter, then why not visit New York? New York is one of the world’s premier tourist destinations, for good reason. The city is rich in culture, history, and things to do. New York has it all.

If you’re planning a trip to New York by the end of this year, then here are the most exciting activities for you to enjoy:

Rockefeller Centre

Every year, the Rockefeller Centre Christmas Tree is turned on. This is an event that’s enjoyed annually by thousands of people. If you’re visiting New York in December, then it’s not something that you’ll want to miss. The atmosphere around the tree is electric, with people laughing and enjoying themselves. After Christmas was canceled last year, people are expecting this years’ celebrations to be fantastic. In addition to visiting the tree, you can wander around the Rockefeller Centre, where you’ll find lots of street vendors, stalls with small businesses, and Christmas-themed activities. Whether you’re traveling alone, with a partner, or with your family, it’s an event that you can’t afford to miss.

Mafia Tour

If you’re interested in learning about New York’s historic dark side, then you could consider attending one of its many mafia tours. You’ll be able to explore New York’s criminal heritage and learn about organized crime in the city. Depending on the tour that you attend, you’ll be taken to infamous sites, including social clubs and bars formerly owned by members of New York’s mafia elite. New York’s former mayor Rudi Giuliani decimated organized crime in the city. While they’re now mostly defunct, their legacy continues.

Ball Drop

If you’re in New York on New Year’s Eve, then there’s nowhere better to be than in Times Square. Residents of the city and surrounding townships visit Times Square each year to watch the ball drop and the clock strike midnight. New Year’s Eve in Times Square is broadcasted around the world to millions of people, in nearly every country. It’s an event that you must see at least once in your life. If you’re lucky enough to be spending your New Year’s in New York, then you have no excuse not to go. Afterward [or before] you can attend one of the area’s many bars or restaurants, which typically offer discounts in the run-up to New Year’s Day.

Bryant Park Winter Village

Every single year in the run-up to Christmas, the Winter Village at Bryant Park returns. The village hosts over 50 artisanal shops and food stalls, in addition to lots of Christmas-themed events – such as an opportunity to meet Santa! In addition to visiting the village’s shops and Christmas-themed attractions, you have to go and visit the ice rink. Bryant Park’s winter ice-rink is known throughout the world, because of its sheer size. The rink is over 17,000 square feet. Above it, there is a café called ‘The Lodge’ where you can watch people skating and enjoy the festivities.

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year begins in February, so, unfortunately, it’s not something you can see unless you stay in New York until the start of next year. Even so, it’s an event that’s always worth mentioning, because it’s one of a kind. New York’s Chinatown hosts street fairs, parades, and firework displays to celebrate Chinese New Year. Many of the restaurants in Chinatown also offer promotional discounts to customers, who eat with them on the holiday.

<img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="639" src="https://amaryroad.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Ornaments-1024x639.jpg" alt="Planning A Trip To New York By The End Of The Year?
Grand Central Fair

There’s nothing that’s quite enjoyable in the run-up to Christmas than a holiday-themed fair. Every single year, from November well into December, the Grand Central Holiday Fair takes place in the Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central Terminal. The fair gives people an opportunity to buy artisanal products, delicious food, and meet other people. It’s the sort of thing that you’ll want to attend with a friend, partner, or with your family. It’s also a great place to go to take photographs, considering that the event’s held in the historic Grand Central Terminal, which is instantly recognizable and known all around the world.

Christmas Lights

Since 1976, the Empire State Building has used lights to commemorate special events and holidays. Since 2012, LED lights have been used, which display more than 16 million colors. This Christmas, it’s expected that there will be an incredible light show, which will light up the building. If you’re around to see it, it’s not something you’ll want to miss.

If you’re planning a trip to New York this year, there’s not a shortage of things to do. As this article shows, New York has lots of fun activities for you to do this winter. There’s nowhere better to be than in New York on Christmas, it’s a fact.

If you are looking for the perfect outdoor activity that allows you to be socially distant while enjoying the spirituality of being on the waves, you should try sailing. One of the best water activities, sailing is challenging both mentally and physically, but can also be calming.

You may visualize the Greek Islands or the Great Barrier Reef when you think about sailing, but there are some equally stunning sailing destinations right here in the U.S. With many travel restrictions still in place, you can travel domestically to reach any of these beautiful and exciting sailing destinations.

Once you are packed up and have readied your Far East Sails, you will be ready to raise the anchor and head out into the blue waters. Let’s take a look at some of the top sailing destinations in the U.S.

San Juan Islands, WA

Nestled right on the border to Canada outside of Seattle, the San Juan Islands is a stunning place to enjoy a sailing day. You can take in the unique skyline of the Emerald City, marvel at the Olympic mountains, and even catch a glimpse of the migrating orcas that are native to the area. The San Juan islands are protected under the National Parks Service making them a pristine destination for the whole family. There are several ports with small seaside towns to enjoy shopping, eating, and entertainment.

Catalina Island, CA

If you want to get out of the city for the day, you can sail from Los Angeles to Catalina Island and explore the bays and ports of this charmingly rugged island. You can spend the day sailing the coastline or stop into Avalon and visit the shops, museums, and galleries that draw millions of visitors every year.

Newport, RI

Newport is known as the sailing capital of the East Coast for good reason. Its calm waters make it a relaxing choice for day sailors. The sailing season kicks off in mid-April and the area is a hotspot for boating enthusiasts throughout the whole summer. There are a number of races and regattas to enjoy or you can stop at some of the seaside towns for a break.

Key West, FL

This charming chain of islands off the southernmost tip of Florida is a must-see destination for sailors. The crystal clear turquoise waters are a great place to take in the tropical paradise of the keys. These islands are built on coral archipelagos and are home to various sea mammals including dolphins and seals. Stop at any one of the over 1,700 island keys or anchor in one of the magical bays to enjoy the day.

Chesapeake Bay, MD

During the summer months, Chesapeake Bay is a popular destination for sailing enthusiasts. Annexed from the Great Lakes, sailors can enjoy the calm waters, lakeside villages, and learn about the rich native history of the area.
Nebraska, both rural and urban, is attracting young adults, and here are the reasons why.

Starting in 1960, people began leaving rural areas of many states, including Nebraska. They preferred to start families in bigger cities like Omaha and Lincoln. Omaha has an economic influence over the whole state, probably because of its growing population and its place as the center for agriculture in Nebraska. Other auxiliary industries benefit from this are well – food associations, manufacturers, logistics companies.

In 2021, Nebraska is ranked 6th in the top 10 states to live in (out of 50), according to a report from the US News. The ranking considered such factors as health care, education, economy, infrastructure, and others. You can use this cost of living calculator to see how Nebraska ranks against your state. Perhaps it’s time to lay down roots in a new, exciting, and financially-optimal state.

Nebraska, both rural and urban, is attracting young adults, and here are the reasons why.

Nature

Nebraska is one of the states with the cleanest air. According to IQAir, the AQI (Air Quality Index) of Omaha is 40 (good); Bellevue is 42 (good); Gretna is 44 (good); and Lincoln is 57 (moderate).

Additionally, the Cornhusker State benefits from natural beauty. It is very picturesque and offers many outdoor activities suitable for people of all ages. Some of the stunning destinations you should consider traveling to are:

Toadstool Geological Park

Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park and Wildlife Safari

Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area

Cowboy Trail

Fort Falls

Henry Doorly Zoo

Once you start exploring Nebraska, not only will you get a good taste of nature, but you will also learn the fascinating history of the state and its people.

Job Opportunities

The unemployment rate in Nebraska is the lowest nationwide. Even though Nebraska’s primary industry is concentrated on farming and crop production, there are other developing sectors of activity such as IT, health care, construction, and retail. With agriculture holding the majority of the market, the rest are steadily developing. With this, newcomers can benefit from already many available facilities, such as nurseries, rentals, or even garage door repair services in Nebraska.

The state is suitable for both young professionals and families. And it holds a lot of opportunities for establishing new businesses as well, partly due to its central location.

Considering the current rise in popularity of remote jobs, Nebraska can accommodate young people looking for a calm place to live, whether they have a family or not.

Low Cost of Living

Housing in Nebraska is affordable for both home purchase and rent. And if you are considering relocating to the rural areas of the state, the rent is significantly lower than in urban areas. Utility expenses are also below the national average of 12.7 cents per kilowatt-hour. In Omaha’s vibrant city, the cost of living in a house is also lower than the national average. You can always compare your current location’s cost of living to another city. Nevertheless, living in Nebraska can be adjusted to your budget by selecting the property and location.

Local Сommunity

Having agriculture as the main economic driver, the communities that make up the state are hardworking and dedicated to maintaining a rural lifestyle. Communities in Nebraska tend to be close-knit and maintain a lifestyle that is slower in pace than other states in the union. If you are looking for a peaceful life or an escape from the city hustle, Nebraska is the right place for you.

Outdoor Activities

Have you heard of agritourism? Agritourism is where fun and farm meet. This includes excursions around the farms to master classes on wine or beer making. In the Cornhusker State, you can experience being a cowboy riding on horseback; you can become a farmer who harvests the crops; and it doesn’t stop there. Agritourism offers workshops on brewing, tasting, cooking, crafting, and much more.

If American history and culture is more your thing, in Nebraska you have the opportunity to participate in Native American powwow events.

Education

There are 44 public and private colleges and universities in Nebraska—most of them are located in Lincoln and Omaha. Probably one of the most known colleges in the state is the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. It offers financial aid, scholarships, and grants to support its students who study full-time. The frequently chosen majors are:

Engineering

Agriculture

Journalism

Management

Marketing

Business

Human Sciences

Another institution you need to know about is Creighton University. Just like the University of Nebraska- Lincoln, here you have a wide range of various majors to choose from. Moreover, it is considered one of the best colleges, and it has been No. 1 in the Midwest for 16 consecutive years. You will also experience Jesuit education, which promotes spiritual energy and unity. Students can join volunteer programs or participate in community service.

Weird Facts

Before moving to Nebraska, consider these interesting facts about Nebraska and its unique laws (though, they are largely unenforced). One such law requires Nebraskans to obtain a state license before giving a perm to their daughter. And sometimes, it is better to skip a church trip if your child has just eaten or feels sick because it is illegal to sneeze or burb during a church service.

If you have gonorrhea, be quick to treat it otherwise you won’t be allowed to get married. In Nebraska, if a bar wants to serve beer, they are required to also brew a kettle of soup. While these laws are almost never enforced, they do serve as a peek into the unique history that makes up the great State of Nebraska.

Conclusion

Nebraska is located in the center of the US. If you decide to move there, expect to breathe fresher air and eat more locally sourced food. To live in Nebraska means to experience a close-knit community founded on the hardworking attitude of local people who enjoy being close to nature. You might decide to start your own farm or help others with cattle and crops, or just participate in a harvest once in a while for a change.

City life is so fast-moving that we don’t always have time to enjoy the beauty around us, so Nebraska can definitely teach us how to live joyfully and pay attention to our surroundings. In 2021, the state offers a lot of job opportunities to develop your career and colleges to enroll in with a number of perspectives.

Nebraska is not all plains and cornfields. There are metropolitan areas in Omaha and Lincoln too. Combining bustling cities with the breathtaking beauty of rural plains, Nebraska has something for everyone.

Natchez Mississippi events

A small town by the great Mississippi river, Natchez got its name after a native American people that lived in the area from prehistoric times until the French colonization. The French founded modern-day Natchez in 1716, but just some 50 years later, they ceded the territory to Great Britain.

After the American revolutionary war, Natchez became the capital of the Mississippi territory. Because of its location on a bluff over the big river, it had a significant role in early 19th-century trade, and it was home to some of the prominent plantation owners in the Deep South.

The city was not harmed in the Civil War, and its antebellum architecture was left intact, which opened a way to fast economic recovery. It is an excellent tourist hotspot.

If you decide to start your American adventure in Natchez, do not forget US ESTA Visa, a travel authorization required for foreign visitors from countries in the Visa Waiver program. The application process is straightforward in answering a detailed questionnaire online. American administration needs around three days to process the application, but it is advised to resolve paperwork before making reservations in Natchez hotels.

Top Natchez events

The deep South is known for hospitality, great Creole, Soul Food, and other delicious cuisine types. It also has excellent weather throughout the year. If you want to avoid crowds, the best time to visit is winter, but there are plenty of events and festivals.

Traditional American rodeo happens every May in Natchez with Adams County Sheriff’s Office Annual Rodeo. The usual fun stuff includes bull riding or barrel racing. See who wins Miss Rodeo.

Natchez food/wine festival is a bit chicer. With a long tradition, the festival is a highly anticipated event every July. Most prominent chefs from the region are preparing germane meals, and there is an excellent selection of the finest wines.

Fall Pilgrimage is a great way to explore historic homes and landmarks in the area. Property owners open up their historic homes and National Registered sites in guided tours.

Natchez hosts the Great Mississippi River Balloon Race in October. Besides the sky’s spectacle, there are great concerts, beer gardens, and lots of fun activities.

Natchez Antique Forum with the lunch on American Queen Steamboat and Angels on the Bluff that takes you to famous person graveyard search are two exciting November events.

Restaurants in downtown Natchez

Natchez has a vibrant restaurant scene with a steady diet of tourists and close to a scenic Mississippi River. Magnolia Grill has a nice and diverse menu with classic American dishes, some seafood, and what is essential to a beautiful view of the river.

The Camp offers a great selection of burgers and craft beers, and it is situated in the old historic building at Natchez Under the Hill.

King’s Tavern is located in one of the oldest houses in the area standing from 1789. The restaurant has an incredible high-end menu, with dinner offerings and weekly specials.

If you like live music, Rolling River Bistro has it every night besides Sunday. It also has local cuisine that will satisfy most visitors.

Located at Main Street, Cotton Alley Café is among the favorite between locals with a selection of sandwiches, salads, steaks, and grill fish.

Winery in Natchez MS

Although Deep South and wine are not compatible, there is an excellent winery close to Natchez. Old South Winery offers wine tasting, vineyard tours, and a superb selection of fine wines. Galbreath’s family runs it since 1979. It is known for cultivating exceptional Southern grapes called Muscadines that are native to Southeast US.

Natchez nightlife

The city nightlife revolves around live music performances, and the venues are usually bars. We already mentioned Rolling River Bistro with performances throughout the week except on Sunday. Bowie’s Tavern has live music on weekends, while Under the Hill Salon hosts bands and acts from Wednesday to Saturday. If you like Karaoke, Under the Hill offers that on Tuesdays.

Other bars that offer live performances include Biscuits and Blues, Corner Bar, and Andrews Bar. Besides bars and clubs, Magnolia Bluffs Casino attracts crowds with great meals, Poker tournaments, and live music on weekends.

To get into the United States of America, you need travel authorization. Check ESTA status and once you get the permit, feel free to make arrangements. ESTA approval is valid for 24 months, and you can explore the country for up to 90 days. Deep South is worth visiting.

Summary

You can follow the Mississippi blues trail in Natchez with extraordinary cultural heritage. You can check famous artists in the Delta Music Museum. The city is within Americana Music Triangle, but besides great live music, Natchez offers respectable cuisine. It has one of the best-preserved collections of antebellum buildings and plenty of historical landmarks dating back to prehistoric Native American times. Natchez is fun, welcoming, and with excellent tourist offer next to the mighty Mississippi River.

The southwest is one of the most underrated road-tripping destinations. Wide-open roads, thrilling views, and some of the country’s most ethereal structures.

Clear skies, smooth, open roads, and a backdrop of distant mountains peppered around you. The temperatures are just right – pleasantly warm – and you’re enjoying the company of the road.

Somewhere along timeless Route 95 in Southern Utah | Photo by Stefan.

Sounds like a road-trip of a lifetime, no?

That’s the kind of scenery you can expect to see on your road trip to Salt Lake City from Las Vegas.

There’s a lot to see along the way, too! The region is all about wide-open roads, thrilling views, and fantastic food, and comprises some of the country’s most ethereal structures.

While there are plenty of towns and rest-stops along the way, you will encounter long stretches of empty roads on the ≈800-mile trip. Wi-Fi will be hard to find, and you will go hours without seeing anyone.

But all things considered, it’s a relatively easy yet stimulating road trip. The experiences you have will make it worth the while.

While it is possible to make the trip in a day, taking four to do it is the best way to enjoy what the region has to offer.

We went ahead and broke the four-day trip down for you – including the spots you could stop and check out, the best restaurants you could eat at, and the best hotels you could stay at.

Summary

The four-day trip will have you covering 800 miles, give or take, and coupling the fuel costs, hotel charges, and food prices, you can expect to spend around $500 on each leg of the trip.

Photo via Unsplash

It’s not the most expensive of trips, but the sights you’ll see and the experiences you’ll have are worth a lot more than the ~$2,000 you’ll spend.

The roads are wide-open for most of the trip, and there are several hiking spots along the way. You’ll be getting a lot of exercise, and the scenery and locale will make the hikes feel liberating.

There’s also a lot of adventure to be had other than hiking. You could do everything from jet-skiing to ATV-riding to ski-jumping on this one trip.

Pack clothes for cold climate, and make sure you always have some food and a lot of water in the car.

Then brace yourself for a swift-yet-stimulating trip.

Day 1: Las Vegas to Zion National Park

Make sure you get a good night’s sleep before you embark on the first leg of your trip to Salt Lake City. Even though it’s one of the smaller legs of the journey at ≈160 miles, you’ll need your energy to enjoy it.

The first leg of the trip ends at Zion National Park, which is an excellent spot to camp for the night. However, there are many great hotels in the area where you could stay the night, too.

The park has an expansive, 2000-feet deep canyon. We recommend camping at the park because the canyons’ view is best enjoyed at the crack of dawn.

The park’s natural rock arches are among the most spectacular sights to see in the entire southwest region.

If you love to hike, you cannot miss hiking along the floor of the Zion Canyon. There are two hiking areas at the canyon – The Narrows and The Subway. If you love a challenge, make sure you hike on The Subway.

The trip to the park will take you about three hours from Las Vegas, but there’s a lot to see on the way. There are also some excellent restaurants in the towns en route to Zion National Park, some of which we’ve highlighted below.

What is the drive like?

As you leave Las Vegas, the roads will slowly begin to open up, and you’ll be in cruise control in no time.

The road to the park is fairly straight-shot – it’s the easiest leg of the journey and will get you warmed up for the long stretches of road you’ll be up against on day 2.

At first, you’ll only see mountains far-off in the distance, and the roads will be lined with dirt and a little shrubbery.

However, when you cross the Arizona State Line, you’ll notice a lot more greenery around you. The mountains will be closer in view, too!

There are loads of gas stations and rest stops along the way, and finding food and gas shouldn’t be a problem.

But you better fuel up in Mesquite, Nevada, since there’s a large stretch of road that you’ll find empty till you reach St. George, Utah.

However, in the middle of these two cities, you’ll come across the beautiful Virgin River Canyon – which is one of the places we recommend you check out.

Where should I stop?

Lake Mead

If you want to start your journey with a refreshing dip in the water or some adrenaline-pumping jet-skiing, visit Lake Mead as you leave Las Vegas.

Lake Mead is a human-made lake about 24 miles from the strip. You can rent jet skis, boat through coves, go scuba diving, or raft through the Black Canyon.

There’s also a lot to do on land at Lake Mead – you could go horseback riding, biking, or go for a hike.

It’s a great spot to kick-off your trip.

Valley of Fire State Park

You’ll need to travel about 15 miles from the I-15 exit to get to the Valley of Fire State Park. It’s best-known for the beautiful red sandstone formations that were formed over 150 million years ago.

You must make sure you hike on the Fire Wave formation – the mesmerizing patterns and the sheer beauty of the place are worth taking the detour for.

You’ll also get some cool pictures out of the little detour.

Virgin River Canyon

The Virgin River Canyon is another spot where you can take a lot of great pictures.

The best part? You don’t need to take a detour to get there – you just keep going on the I-15, and about an hour and a half into the trip, you’ll see it.

The red cliffs contrast beautifully with the river, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most stunning canyons you’ll see on the entire road trip.

Where should I eat?

Chicago Greek – Mesquite, Nevada

The Chicago Greek is a cute mom-n-pop restaurant that serves some of the best Greek food in the region.

Some of their best dishes include the Greek salad, the veggie pita, and the Greek fries. The Greek fries are the highlight of the place.

You could dine-in, but they also offer takeaways if you want to eat on the move.

Viva Chicken – St. George, Utah

If you’re craving some delicious chicken but don’t want to eat unhealthily, Viva Chicken at St. George won’t disappoint.

It’s a nice sit-down restaurant that offers gluten-free options and some delicious sauces. They also have drinks and provide some tasty vegetarian options too.

The prices are reasonable, and they’re a local favorite – when you’re in St. George, make sure you check out Viva Chicken.

Sakura Japanese Steakhouse – St. George, Nevada

If you’re feeling an urge to get some good Japanese food, or maybe have never tried it before and want to, Sakura Japanese Steakhouse is the right restaurant to eat at.

They’re one of the best-rated restaurants you’ll get the chance to eat at on the entire trip.

The prices are reasonable, and their service is excellent – you can expect to have a first-class experience in every way.

Where should I stay?

Day 2: Zion National Park to Monument Valley

All the hiking and eating on day one will leave you relaxed and bring you great sleep. Rest well because the second leg of the journey is where things start to get serious.

The ≈230-mile journey will take you about four hours to complete, and the roads won’t be straight and easy to navigate like the first leg.

However, you’ll be surrounded by nature, and you’ll see a lot more greenery than you did on the first leg of the trip.

The second leg ends at Monument Valley, a modest and quiet town. Wi-Fi access will be very limited in the area, which you’ll need to be prepared for.

But there’s a lot to do at Monument Valley. You could drive through Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park and take a look at some of Utah’s most magnificent sights. You’ll feel like you’re in a classic Hollywood western!

You could also take a jeep tour and view the 11 scenic viewpoints of the area. But two things you shouldn’t miss when you’re at Monument Valley are the sunrise and the sky-gazing at night – it’s an experience like no other.

What is the drive like?

You’ll be up in the mountains – and driving in the mountains is as stimulating as it is difficult. Unlike the first leg of the trip, you will need to make many turns when you leave the park for Monument Valley.

However, the climate there is pleasantly cold, and the air is fresh. The first few miles will feel liberating and invigorating at the same time. You’ll be tempted to roll down your windows and enjoy the soft, cool breeze!

As you leave the mountains and get on highway 89 via Mt. Carmel Junction, the weather will slowly begin to get warmer.

However, you’ll still be surrounded by mountains and greenery, which, coupled with the clear skies, will make it one of the most refreshing drives of the trip.

Make sure you fuel up when you reach the town of Kanab, and prepare to enjoy the wide-open road that follows for about 80 miles till you reach Page.

Page marks the halfway point of the trip, and you’ll get there in about two hours. You will see more of the same – clear skies, wide-open roads, and some fantastic scenery – till you reach Mountain Valley.

Gas stations are easier to find in the second half of the trip, which, coupled with the smoother, comparatively straighter roads, make for a more relaxed drive.

There are many attractions to check out and some great food to try along the way – the second day will undoubtedly be a lot more fun than the first!

Where should I stop?

Kolob Canyons

The Kolob Canyons are technically a part of Zion National Park, but they’re separated and made into their own park.

If you love to hike and enjoyed the terrain of Zion National Park, you cannot miss going to the Kolob Canyons.

You’ll get an intimate look at the park’s diverse, colorful landscape if you decide to hike on one of the three trails.

The Timber Creek Overlook trail is the shortest of the three, and hiking to and fro should take about thirty minutes. The short hike will give you a quick look at the Kolob Canyons, the Kolob Terrace, and the Pine Valley Mountains.

The invigorating sights and the beautiful display of desert wildflowers on the trail make it one of the most enticing spots to visit.

But if you’re tired and don’t want to hike or want to spend more time at the other attractions, you could take a five-mile scenic drive in the canyons and take some pictures of the beautiful landscape.

The fascinating natural arrangement of the canyons makes taking the 40-minute drive from Zion National Park worth it.

Antelope Canyon

If there’s one thing you need to see in the entire American Southwest, it’s Antelope Canyon. It’s one of the most photographed slot canyons for good reason.

The canyon is a forty-minute drive from Page, and we recommend you grab a bite there before you leave (you can find our recommendations below).

The surreal sandstone canyon is divided into two areas: Upper Antelope Canyon (“The Crack”) and Lower Antelope Canyon (“The Corkscrew”).

You cannot visit either of the areas alone, and you will need to go with a guide. Tours start from around 8 a.m. and fewer visitors tour in the morning.

However, tours continue well into the evening, each lasting between one and two hours, so you can visit whenever you find comfortable.

We recommend that you visit the canyons between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. since that’s when the canyon is best-lit. Taking pictures in the ethereal light shafts will be super refreshing, especially if you hiked in the Kolob Canyons early in the morning.

This is one of the most enthralling attractions on the entire trip, so make sure you don’t miss it.

Where should I eat?

Zion Pizza & Noodle Co – Mount Carmel Hwy, Springdale

If you’re in the mood for pizza after hiking at Zion National Park, getting a treat at Zion Pizza & Noodle Co is a great idea.

You can dine-in or order takeout, and since they serve customers in 15 minutes flat, it’s an excellent restaurant to visit if you’re really hungry.

Happy customers report devouring the Thai Chicken pizza, so consider ordering one the evening you’re at the park.

Stage Coach Grille – 99 N State St, La Verkin

If you’re not in the mood for pizza and want to eat at a proper sit-down restaurant when you’re up in the mountains at Zion National Park, Stage Coach Grille is worth checking out.

The wood-filled mainstay has a unique, rustic charm. They serve crafted beer and wine and are best-known for their cooked-to-order steaks. The classy atmosphere and the excellent western menu make it an excellent spot for a filling meal.

Big John’s Texas BBQ – 153 S Lake Powell Blvd, Page

Eating your fill at a retro BBQ joint is never a bad idea – and that’s exactly what Big John’s Texas BBQ is.

The drive to Antelope Canyon will take you about forty minutes from Page, and if you decide to tour both the parts of the canyon, you’ll likely be there for at least five hours.

Getting their well-cooked brisket or any other slow-smoked meat of choice will not only uplift your mood and satisfy cravings but also give you the energy to enjoy the long tours at Antelope Canyon.

It’s an excellent spot for crafted beer, too, and we highly recommend you check it out.

BirdHouse – 707 N Navajo Dr, Page

BirdHouse’s Honey Butter Chicken is one of the most popular foods in Page.

Locals and tourists alike love the crispy fried chicken, and some even come back to Page after visiting Antelope Canyon to have the mashed potatoes and get another taste of their excellent selection of sauces with some juicy chicken.

Blue Coffee Pot Restaurant – Kayenta, Arizona

So, you hiked in the morning, visited the canyons in the afternoon, and are driving to Monument Valley tired. A good meal and a warm bed are what you’ll want.

Blue Coffee Pot is by far the best restaurant one could eat at on their way to Monument Valley.

The locals comprise a big chunk of their clientele, which says a lot. If you miss eating their Navajo Taco and Pie, you’ll be missing out on half of what Monument Valley is about.

Plus, you can’t beat a locally-owned restaurant when you want to get a feel for the local culture!

Where should I stay?

Day 3: Monument Valley to Hanksville

The third leg is the shortest leg of the trip at ≈150 miles. You’ll be traveling to Hanksville, which is another small town in Utah.

Make sure you get some sleep on the night of day 2. While you’ll need to drive less, the roads aren’t straight-shot, and there’s a lot for you to see. The three-hour drive can get straining if you’re tired.

There aren’t many restaurants between Monument Valley and Hanksville, so make sure you grab a bite at Monument Valley before you leave. Carrying a little extra food is also a good idea.

Wi-Fi will be a rare find at Hanksville, even more so than it was in Monument Valley. But the town has some great food and even better sights to enjoy, which will keep you occupied.

You could also rent out motorbikes or ATVs in Hanksville and get your adrenaline pumping before you mellow out, gazing at the night sky at Goblin Valley State Park.

While Hanksville has a good deal of comfortable hotels, we recommend that you camp at Goblin Valley State Park for the night. The night sky is full of stars at the park, and it’s a view you cannot miss when you’re there.

What is the drive like?

The roads will be wide-open, and you’ll almost always be close to a mountain or a canyon, making the whole drive super stimulating.

There are at least a dozen spots where you can stop and take pictures, and since the road is wide open, you can take it as slow as you like.

As you leave Monument Valley, your surroundings will begin to get less and less green. However, the close look you get at the mountains and canyons in the region more than makes up for the lack of greenery.

While you’ll be covering a shorter distance compared to the other legs of the trip, you’ll need to take quite a few turns to reach Hanksville.

You must fuel up at Mexican Hat since there aren’t many gas stations en route to Hanksville.

The climate will get colder as you reach Hanksville, and the roads are comparatively straighter after you reach the halfway point – which is Fry Canyon.

The second half of the drive will be as relaxing as the first half was stimulating. You’re in for an energizing drive!

Where should I stop?

There are about a dozen canyons and mountains between Monument Valley and Hanksville. Don’t be afraid to stop and take pictures or go for a hike wherever you like.

However, there are three attractions along the way that we think you shouldn’t miss:

Goosenecks State Park

Goosenecks State Park is a short drive from Mexican Hat, and the giant, naturally-carved rock formations make the short detour worth it.

You’ll get a sweeping view of the deep canyons and the snaking San Juan river.

It’s beautiful to see how the river meanders through the terrain, and one glance at the canyons will give you a sense of just how small you really are.

Hiking along the edges is one of the most liberating experiences one could have, and the awe-inspiring views make it all the more invigorating.

Natural Bridges National Monument

By day 2, you will start to feel that you’ve seen it all. But the southwest region has many more sights to offer – some of the most riveting of which are at Natural Bridges National Monument.

The park is small but serene and very beautiful. Every trailhead provides a lot of details about the possible paths you could take.

You could spend a day exploring this spot, and the view alone makes it worth visiting.

Goblin Valley State Park

“Otherworldly” is how most would describe their experience at Goblin Valley State Park.

The park has thousands of goblins (sometimes called “hoodoos”), which are mushroom-shaped rock formations. Some of these are several yards tall.

Hiking there isn’t strenuous at all, and even a short hike will give you a feel for the locale.

The park’s expanse contrasts beautifully with the clear blue sky, and the nights get very dark, which makes the star-filled sky look magical.

We recommend camping at the park for the night and not getting a hotel room. Restrooms are available, so refreshing yourself shouldn’t be a problem.

Where should I eat?

Stan’s Burger Shack – 150 UT-95, Hanksville

There’s nothing like a nice, cold milkshake after a long day of hiking. Stan’s Burger Shack is most famous for its excellent milkshakes, so make sure you grab one when you’re in town.

The restaurant also serves some juicy burgers and hot fries – and everything’s always fresh. No wonder the spot is a local favorite!

Outlaw’s Roost – 20 N, UT-95, Hanksville

Outlaw’s Roost has a pleasing ambiance that goes really well with the locale. But what’s even better is the food – the tacos, chips, and burritos are some of the best you’ll ever eat.

They have fantastic salsa too, and you’ll be blown away by the incredible food offered at excellent prices.

Duke’s Slickrock Grill – 275 UT-24, Hanksville

The outstanding ribs offered at Duke’s Slickrock Grill make it a popular spot for both tourists and locals to come to eat at.

They have a nice selection of beer, and the western-style atmosphere finished with the rustic décor gives it an excellent atmosphere.

They also offer a filling and yummy breakfast, and we recommend that you eat your fill here before you leave for Salt Lake City the next morning.

Where should I stay?

Day 4: Hanksville to Salt Lake City

The final leg of the trip is the least straining and most enjoyable. While the drive to Salt Lake City is longer at about 230 miles, it’s also easier and a lot more relaxing.

You won’t be hiking as much, either – you’ll be shopping, eating some fantastic food, and checking out some of Salt Lake City’s best attractions.

Wi-Fi will become increasingly more available, especially in the second half of the journey, and you will see the backdrop transform from massive naturally-formed structures to closely-packed human-made structures.

The change in the setting can be a little overwhelming – it happens in the span of four hours, and letting go of that feeling of liberation that being in nature brings you can leave you a little bitter.

Making the most of the day is really easy, though. We recommend taking it slow and stopping at any canyon you find interesting en route to Salt Lake City – there are quite a few of them.

Eat lunch at Salt Lake City, and check out the shopping centers, the zoo, and the planetarium. You could also go skiing on the mountains in the outskirts of the city.

Ending your day at one of the hotels we recommend below will leave you feeling satisfied. If this is your first road trip, you may end it viewing the world through a completely different lens.

What is the drive like?

While the drive is four hours long, the roads are easier to navigate since they are relatively straight-shot. It will be an easy drive.

But it’ll also be an enjoyable drive – your surroundings will get increasingly greener as you make your way to Salt Lake City. The change of the backdrop from long stretches of sandy roads to loads of greenery will be very refreshing.

During the first half of the leg, you’ll come across a few canyons, and we encourage you to stop and hike if the thought crosses your mind.

In the second half of the leg, rivers will almost always be in view until you begin to enter the city.

It’s undoubtedly the most relaxing drive of the trip.

Where should I stop?

Thanksgiving Point

The Thanksgiving Point complex has a farm, a garden, and a museum – and that’s often enough to convince one to check it out.

It’s a great spot to stop at and explore – the large sprawling gardens make for an excellent change of scenery from the dirt-covered terrain you encountered in the first three legs of the trip.

Visiting The Museum of Natural Curiosity is a must – it has more than 400 interactive exhibits, making it one of the most exciting attractions of the entire trip.

The complex also has the Butterfly Biosphere, which is home to thousands of species of butterflies.

We recommend reserving a few hours in the morning to check it out.

Clark Planetarium

Clark Planetarium is all it’s hyped up to be. It has three floors of free-to-visit exhibits, all of which are interactive. Visiting will give you insight into a scientist’s view of the Earth and the worlds beyond.

The planetarium also hosts a lot of 2D and 3D science and space-themed shows.

Red Butte Garden

If you wish to hike a little more, the Red Butte Garden is worth visiting. It’s the largest botanical garden in the West, spanning over more than 21 acres.

Taking the five-mile hike and getting some fresh air after lunch in the city is an excellent idea.

Utah Olympic Park

If you’re in the mood to get your adrenaline-pumping one last time before you end the trip, visit the Utah Olympic Park. It’s open all through the year and was built especially for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

You can go ski-jumping, bobsledding, extreme tubing, and even have a crack at aerial ski training. The park offers rock climbing, zip-lining, and a handful of other activities, making it worth the visit.

Where should I eat?

Los Jilbertos Mexican Fast Food – 1010 E Main St, Wellington

Treating yourself to a fresh, pocket-friendly, and yummy breakfast burrito is a great way to start your day.

The joint is located in Wellington, which you’ll reach about two hours into the final leg. The several flavor options and excellent prices make it our top breakfast recommendation of the entire trip.

The Other Place Restaurant – 469 E 300 S, Salt Lake City

The Other Place is an old-school diner with a Greek flair. They offer some delicious comfort food, and the helpings are huge, too.

You’ll surely have an appetite when you enter the city, so we recommend that you get your lunch at The Other Place.

Red Lotus Bistro – 329 S State St, Salt Lake City

Both locals and tourists have nothing but good things to say about the Red Lotus Bistro. It’s one of the city’s best restaurants, and undoubtedly the best restaurant to visit for Chinese food.

The bistro also offers the most amazing Vietnamese cold-brew. You cannot go wrong with anything you order – we recommend ending your day with a meal here.

Where should I stay?

The southwest is one of the most underrated regions for road-tripping. You’ll get a lot of exercise, connect with nature, and see some of the most fascinating sights.

The best part about it is that the trip is neither too expensive nor too challenging to make.

Whether you’ve never had a road trip before or have a tradition of road tripping with friends or family, this is a road trip you’ll unlike any other you’ll have.

And our itinerary just made it a whole lot easier to pull off.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, our work habits have changed. In particular, employers are increasingly offering their employees the option to work from home. As a result, we’re witnessing a rise in mobility and connectivity, as well as an exodus from big, crowded cities to more remote destinations, where people can go to recharge while also continuing to work from a peaceful, serene place.

And nowadays, with proximity to the physical office no longer a requirement, some people have taken to retreating to smaller towns and natural destinations to expand the work-from-home scenario into work from anywhere. With that in mind, let’s take a look at one such town that represents a perfect destination for digital nomads and remote workers everywhere: Bend, Oregon.

Photo by McKayla Crump on Unsplash

An Amazing Location Nestled In Nature

Bend is located along the Deschutes River in Deschutes County. Specifically, it’s situated between two ecoregions: the Eastern Cascades Slopes and Foothills and the Deschutes River Valley. The natural landscape in Bend is diverse and imposing. From snowy mountains to bustling rivers, there are many places to reconnect with nature.

The Deschutes River runs through the city, and a dam forms the Mirror Pond. There is also the Pilot Butte, a lava dome that was created from an extinct volcano located in Bend. The city is also home to the Horse Lava Tube System, and the south of the city has the Newberry Volcano and Newberry National Volcanic Monument. To the southeast, you’ll also find the Pine Mountain Observatory, which is owned and operated by the University of Oregon, but which (under normal circumstances) allows the public to visit for viewings, as well.

A Jaw-Dropping National Park a Stone’s Throw Away

Crater Lake national park is just a 2-hour drive away. It is home to the deepest lake in the country which is known for its beautiful blue waters. Since the national park rests in the center of a dormant volcano, it is home to plenty of fascinating volcanic formations that inspire awe. The National Park Service recommends a wide variety of winter activities, tours, junior ranger activities, backcountry camping, scenic drives, and ranger programs to keep every member of the family busy. In this beautiful park, you can experience the thrill of becoming one with nature as your worries vanish like your cell phone reception.

Beautiful Weather All Year Round

Bend has a regular, semi-arid climate with warm days and cool nights, which is typical for the high desert region. Summertime in Bend brings big differences in temperatures between days and nights, and it’s not unheard of for hard frosts to occur even during the summer months. During the fall, days remain warm and dry, with temperatures sometimes reaching higher than normal, which is known as an Indian summer. The climate allows for everything from rafting and water sports in the summer to skiing and snowboarding in the winter. This brings us to one of the main reasons for choosing to pucker down in Bend, Oregon.

Central Oregon is the Center of Outdoor Action

The mentality of Bendites is oriented toward a healthy work-life balance, and many of the locals are lovers of the outdoors. There are unique scenery points, that are a hub for outdoor activities, scattered all throughout the region. In fact, Bend is a great destination in which to experience the great outdoors. In particular, it’s a top spot for recreational activities ranging from cross-country skiing, hiking, and biking to rock climbing, fishing, and rafting. All the hashtag warriors can be sure that the social media pictures of all their outdoor adventures are going to knock the socks off all their followers.

Small Town Charm, Big City Dreams

The cost of living in Bend is lower than in larger cities like Portland. Bend is balanced in terms of utilities and prices for groceries and entertainment. However, the rental real estate market is rather competitive with high demand and moderate supply. For instance, a rental apartment in Bend can start at $700 for a small apartment further away from the city center and go up to more than $2,300 for a larger apartment in the heart of the city. Whether you are a hotshot financial analyst, customer service representative, or lawn care specialist, you can definitely find something in your budget in this city. But, considering the volatility of the current market due to the pandemic, these rates may vary more widely at this time.

Although it’s a smaller city, Bend is actually recognized as a metropolis in the region. The art scene is also growing in Bend, and the city has made music and arts festivals a central focus. Although the pandemic has caused most festivals to be either postponed or canceled, the people of Bend still take pride in their culture and love for music and art. To that end, the city has two museums and many art galleries, and the art scene is open to anyone who wants to volunteer or begin a career in this field.

Move To A Robust Remote Worker Economy

While the job market in Bend is diverse, it’s also relatively limited with only a few major employers, in addition to entrepreneurs starting small businesses like local micro-breweries and restaurants. However, lately, the city has been focusing on attracting more industries, including tech and software development, as well as bioscience. This also includes the rise in remote jobs as more and more people choose to telecommute.

Bend is actually growing in popularity as a destination for remote workers, as well — 12.1% of its workforce telecommutes, according to Moving to Bend. Plus, as a remote worker, you can pick and choose — with the option to work from your rental apartment, various natural parks, or right next to a river.

The beauty of living in a place like Bend is that you’re always close to downtown, even if you live further away in a quiet corner close to a forest. Moreover, prior to the pandemic, Bend had also gained in popularity as a commuter town, with people working in major hubs like Seattle choosing to relocate here thanks to the lower cost of living and abundance of outdoor opportunities.

Coffee Shops Make Great Coworking Spaces

You are going to find yourself spoilt for choice when it comes to interesting locations for your remote working schedule. Downtown Bend has an old-world charm and character that is hard to match. The buildings and surrounding neighborhoods have a history that reeks from every brick. Sunny afternoons in tree-lined streets and cobblestone sidewalks feel like they are straight out of a postcard. Behind this charm, there is a chic, cosmopolitan center that offers plenty of locations for you to whip out your laptop and get busy.

The Old Mill District is another amazing location to idle away or be productive. The district is known for its shops, galleries, and restaurants, any of which should prove a fertile breeding ground for your creativity.

A Great Place To Call Home

Whether you decide to move to Bend for the nature, the growing and developing community, or the serenity of a smaller town, there are many options to choose from, and many people willing to help you on your journey. Best of all, the town is open and welcoming, and its residents are actively involved in promoting their home, with projects like Moving to Bend, which was built in collaboration with the local Chamber of Commerce.

There’s no shortage of things to do there — even now, with most places being closed and restrictions in place. Here, you can reconnect with nature and slow down a little to recharge and start fresh. But, before you move to Bend, make sure to research the area and the real estate market. Balance out the cost of living and take all of the necessary precautions for a safe and secure move to the area. While you’re at it, talk to the locals and find out how to best complete the move — either on your own or with the help of professionals. As always, be mindful of your physical and mental health, and stay safe during these uncertain times.

I could write about how beautiful it is here, but you can find pictures online. I could write about how nice the weather is, but you can find that too. This is about what it’s like to live here.

Many people have heard of Santa Barbara, but few outside California know exactly where it is (“It’s part of LA, right?”) or what it’s like (“Don’t y’all have big fires?”) So, thought I’d share my own experience.

Now, I could write about how beautiful it is here, but you can find plenty of pictures online. I could write about how nice the weather is, but you can find that too. I could write about how expensive the homes are, things to do, etc., but all this stuff is easy to find out.

What I’d like to write about is what it’s like to live here.

First let me just say: I’ve been to 29 countries and lived on 3 continents, and believe me: it simply doesn’t get a whole lot better than Santa Barbara & the surrounding areas of Goleta, Summerland, & Montecito.

Santa Barbara truly is just as wonderful as it seems. Life is easy. Life is relaxing. People are carefree, healthy & full of enthusiasm. The place is absolutely stunningly beautiful. Just stupidly gorgeous in every direction. And everyone seems to realize this fact all of the time. There is an undercurrent of positive energy that permeates every inch of the central coast. I’ve lived here 10 years, yet there are times when I’ll take a walk down State Street and think to myself, “Wow, I feel lucky.”

View north from the Courthouse downtown.

That much is obvious to visitors & tourists. But what surprised me about Santa Barbara is how deep & layered the beauty runs: it’s not just skin deep. I’ve seen every inch of this town, yet always feel like there is one more beach to discover…one more street I haven’t been down…one more phenomenal view I haven’t seen.

Development

I’ve always felt Santa Barbara has the perfect population density for it’s size. This is no accident; the housing market is tightly controlled & protected from over-development. You want high-rise hotels and suburban sprawl? Move to Orange County. This place isn’t for you. In fact, this is the place OC residents come up to for the weekend in order to get away from it all. Santa Barbara is special in large part because of the value people here place on their land.

Looking out over the 101 from Summerland

Which brings me to politics. Santa Barbara is an accepting, environmentally conscious, left-leaning city, no question about it. I’m 32, and couldn’t name more than 5-6 people here who would call themselves conservative. I’m not making judgments, and I certainly don’t want to turn this into a political piece. Don’t get me wrong; it’s no Berkeley. But west-coast liberalism is without a doubt a core part the city’s soul.

If it seems like all people do here is eat and drink, that’s because it’s not far from the truth. And we do it extremely well. SB has farmer’s markets 6 days a week, and what can seem like an endless supply of some of the best cafés and restaurants in the country. Wine country is a 30 minute drive away. State Street is alive at night throughout the year, but there is no shortage of awesome places off the beaten path.

UC Santa Barbara

The scene out at UCSB is a whole different animal, yet still an extremely important part of the city’s soul. Most people who come through our town do so because of a connection to the university. Isla Vista, the unincorporated city where UCSB is located, is a tightly-packed community of 23,000 students & faculty, all of whom seem to be riding bikes at exactly the same time. It is one of the most beautiful settings for a university in the world. Sort of like Pepperdine, but without the holier-than-thou attitude.

UCSB students gather in a candlelight vigil after the April, 2014 mass-shooting.

Despite recent media reports that suggest otherwise, the IV community is extremely friendly & hospitable, and a very cool neck of the woods. At times it feels like a child who no longer lives at home: Far enough away from downtown that it’s out of sight/out of mind, but close enough to visit when you need to.

One thing that struck me when I first moved here is how dark the city is at night. This is a city that thrives in sunshine. It feels like an old Spanish neighborhood during summer nights, but in the winter it can definitely feel a bit dead at times.

Because it’s such a tight-knit community, SB is an easy place to make friends. The problem is that many of those friends will leave; much more than they do in other places. I’ve had maybe 10 good friends leave in the past 5 years. And it’s no secret why; as wonderful as our city is, it has an extremely high cost of living, and good paying jobs aren’t easy to find. People end up leaving not because they want to, but because they have no other choice.

Nightlife in Santa Barbara

Nightlife here is great when you’re in college or in your early 20’s, although by your late 20’s it can start to feel slightly stale. If you’re married or in a relationship, you’ll have no complaints here. There is always something going on, and you don’t have to look very hard. I got married pretty young so I never really experienced the city as a single guy, but a lot of my single male friends don’t really dig the dating scene here.

Photo by OC Gonzalez on Unsplash

The Santa Barbara Courthouse is one of the most beautiful & photographed public buildings in the US.

Jobs

I glazed over the issue of jobs, but it deserves a second mention. This is primarily a tourist town. As such, many of the jobs are in the tourism sector, and many of those don’t pay particularly well. It has been said that fewer than 1% of SB residents could afford to buy a home here on their own. So how do people afford it? Aside from the usual doctors, lawyers, financiers, and professors, there is also a robust and growing tech sector. But overall the demand for the high-paying jobs they provide far exceeds the supply.

One thing I love about this town is that unlike Beverly Hills or Malibu where every house is gigantic, and every other car is a Rolls Royce, a lot of the wealth here is “hand-me-down.” When you drive through the Riviera here you often see fairly modest houses with older model cars parked outside. Teachers, retail managers, etc. Same old story — the parents bought in the 70s for 200k, the house is now worth 1.2m, etc. Of course other Riviera homes are very large with very nice cars, and as the dynamics of the city are changing as we speak.

Santa Barbara Culture

For it’s size the city has a truly staggering amount of culture. Over 10 theaters, a solid art scene, museums, and the Santa Barbara Film Festival each January. The music & comedy scene is a bit lacking, but remember that Ventura is 30 minutes away, and LA is only 90. And every drive is beautiful.

Getting Around

It’s incredibly easy to get around; traffic getting in and out of the city can be a bit sticky, but they are widening the 101 to make this easier. In-town commutes are a joke. There are plenty of fantastic bike routes through the city, hills and country, and walkability is extremely high — especially for Southern California. The 101 runs right through the city, and getting to LA, San Francisco, Vegas, San Diego, is a cinch. When you hit the traffic in those cities, you begin to wonder how anyone can live there, and treasure the central coast even more.

Driving from LA to Santa Barbara is like getting over a migraine headache. Once you get past Ventura it’s one of the most gorgeous & satisfying places to drive around in the entire country. Billboards are banned, the roads are extremely well-maintained, and there are no high-rises to block the view.

Despite the wealth, this isn’t a town that cares about money as much as you might think. It doesn’t have the excessive flashiness you find in LA. but there is also plenty of quirkiness, individuality, a solid middle class, students, kids, and everything in between. Demographically it leans older and wealthier, but it doesn’t define the city’s character.

Santa Barbara Bowl

There are plenty of people in Santa Barbara with more money than they know what to do with. The city of Santa Barbara, on the other hand, knows exactly what to do with its money: Protect itself. For over a hundred years Santa Barbarians have understood how special this place is, and what it takes to keep it special. It’s not that people here are against development or change — they just want to make sure that it’s done right, for the sake of the city & future generations.

Perfect waves at Rincon

Santa Barbara is not without its problems, but they pale in comparison to what other cities face. Our biggest issues center around gangs & violence, of which there is more than you would expect, but not much. Graffiti is another recurring problem, and SB is famous for having a high homeless population…

But the fact is even the homeless people here seem relatively happy. That’s not a joke. And really, how can you not be? The place is perfect. It’s paradise in every sense of the word. It’s almost unfair.

Summary

If you’re lucky enough to go to school, find work, own a home, or retire here, then kudos to you! If not, then at least come vacation here and see what it’s all about. Like I said, I’ve been all over, and it doesn’t get much better than this neck of the woods here. If I didn’t live here I probably wouldn’t even live in the United States — I’d move to Australia.*

I’ve scoured the web. This is the best photo of Santa Barbara ever taken.

Come visit and see for yourself. Hope to see you here soon!

*Update: In 2019 my wife and I moved to Australia. But we will always call SB home!

Hence, we will focus on the most popular activities and places that you can spend some of your time during your stay in the city.
Nowadays, it’s becoming pretty hard to get reliable and updated information about Los Angeles, as different sources on the Internet are sometimes contradictory.

There’s nothing more to wish for in sojourning the land of the Stars and Stripes. But perhaps, just like what any other travellers are searching for, guides and tips for a well-planned budget-friendly trip.

There are many benefits of travelling cheaply, a few benefits are; you can stretch your money longer, you get to experience how locals go around in their own city/country or watch this CheapOAir commercial to find out other reasons why travelling on a budget is a great plan.

Anyway, let us get going, read ahead and learn more about how one could enjoy the US without spending a whole lot of cash.

Plan and design your trip a few months ahead of time

Planning for a trip two to three months before departure can be enough. But sometimes, travellers plan a year before the actual travel. Anyway, taking up your time in designing the perfect trip that marks down expenses doesn’t have a deadline. And since you’re months away from your exact travel date, keep on haggling and look for the lowest prices.

Moreover, finding a reliable booking site can ensure that you will be likely able to book flight tickets and accommodation at discounted rates. You can find cheap flights directly and around the United States on CheapOAir. This site has been around for as long as I can remember since I stepped foot on the travelling world.

They help you not only find the cheapest flight tickets on the web, but they also can assist in scanning the best deals for hotels, cruises, and car rentals. It is literally the one-stop-shop for holiday planning.

And as long as it is not a holiday season or peak in your destination, prices are usually below the minimum.

TIP: Make a travelling to the USA checklist

Write your Itinerary/route

Having and writing your itinerary/route beforehand can let you estimate the cost of your travel for cheap in the US. You can quickly breakdown expenses by prioritizing first the destinations you are wishing to go. Also, knowing how much you’ll likely to spend on the trip can help you plan your itinerary better.

A planned itinerary can eliminate chances of possible overlapping costs on accommodations, flights, tours, and additional hidden charges that you don’t need.

Rent a Car

Domestic flights and ground transportation are often expensive in the US. Renting a car is the cheapest option wherein you can freely travel for cheap. Car rental is typically the first option in the United States since local transportations are generally poor. When moving a long distance, tourists, and even the locals rent a car upon arrival at the airport.

Sometimes, many holiday packages come with a free rental car. Rental companies have offices in all major cities, so finding your ideal vehicle is not hard, and it just takes a phone call. It may also be cheaper to arrange a local deal for yourself because some companies may charge you for daily airport access (with tax).

You can even do the West Coast America road trip.

Stay at B&B’s or Guest House or Hostels

Often, B&B accommodations in the United States have a kitchen where you can cook instead and spend less dining at restaurants. If you’re not travelling with your kids, it is also an excellent option to share bedrooms and hostels with other travellers.

Hostels offer accommodations much cheaper than hotels. The good thing about shared rooms is you can meet like-minded travellers who can even give you travel recommendations. However, if you don’t feel like sharing a room, you can always find a cheap guest house with complete privacy.

Limit Your Destination

Alongside with planning for your itinerary/route is by limiting the number of destinations you want to explore. It is best to plan your itinerary/route with states near to each other or to travel in one direction.

Limiting your destination means not overloading your itinerary and instead maximizing the tourist destination points of the state your longing to see. Besides, it may take a while in grasping the things to do and the beauty of each States.

One suitcase can be enough, and start the trip by mapping out the routes you’ve been wanting in traversing. Another essential document to prepare is your ESTA, we’ll talk more about it later.

You can easily map out routes in google maps. The great thing you can do is create your personalized plan with your desired stops. You can add colours, personal notes, and images on each stop using this app.
