When is the ideal season to visit Croatia and enjoy sailing in its cool waters?

Croatia is one of the most beautiful countries on earth. With beautiful beaches lining up its coast, it is one of the most visited places and is a famous tourist spot. However, people are often confused as to when is the ideal season to visit Croatia and enjoy sailing in its cool waters?

Well, to answer your question, the best season to visit this place lies between April to October. During this time the weather is really pleasant. Read this article to find a further breakdown of what each month offers.

From June to August, the weather is really pleasant. Also, the land, as well as the waters, are both cool. You can enjoy an amazing sailing experience. However, you will get the best sailing experience if you visit between September and October when the weather is mild and the soft winds blow across the land. You can book a yacht and enjoy sailing here. For more information, click here.

April

You may take advantage of some of the best deals on Croatian sailing in April when the pre-season bookings start. If you’re looking for an amazing experience in the Croatians Islands on a budget, April is the ideal month for that. You may be eligible for airfare discounts during this time.

May

You may not encounter many tourists during this period. Thus, if you prefer a quiet stay here, this is the right month to visit. Temperatures are expected to climb, the days will become longer. The wind will still be there, but it will be less ferocious.

June

As the Croatian cruise season approaches, the cost of boat rentals will rise. If you are traveling on a budget, it is best that you avoid going to Croatia during June.

July

Because July is the busiest sailing month of the year, expect prices to be higher. However, the weather will be pleasant, with lots of daylight and moderate temperatures. Swimming is especially enjoyable now that the weather is mild and the water is warm. Relaxing sailing vacations in Croatia are ideal at this time of year.

August

It is the busiest and most expensive month of the year to rent a boat because of the rising demand and prices. Since the water temperature is suitable for sailing, this is the best time for you to visit this country and enjoy an amazing sailing experience.

September

Boat prices continue to fall as the post-sailing season starts in September. Around the month’s end, you can easily get a booking here.

October

With the cruising season in Croatia coming to a close in October, it’s rare to see many people during this time. The prices will drop significantly during this time, making your vacation more affordable. The water will remain warm enough for swimming even as temperatures continue to fall, and there will be plenty of sunny days with steady breezes.

You can consider visiting during any of these months and you will have an amazing sailing experience.

Croatia is located in the south-east region of Europe and in the past 25 years has become one of the top tourist destinations worldwide.

Croatia is located in the south-east region of Europe and in the past 25 years has become one of the top tourist destinations worldwide. Therefore, narrowing this list down to only a handful of spots was extremely difficult, but we hope by the end of it your next holiday destination will be made clear!

1. Dubrovnik

Starting off in the south, Dubrovnik is usually recognized as the “Pearl of the Adriatic”. Orange rooftops contrast the blue sky and this city offers numerous sightseeing possibilities.

The cobblestone streets, the Old Town, defensive walls, palaces, and churches have stolen the breath of many visitors, locking in famous filmmakers as well. Not too far away is also the Lokrum island with a symbolic history.

2. The Makarska Riviera

Moving a little up north, we find the breathtaking Makarska Riviera. It consists of many smaller and serene resorts, but the largest one is Makarska itself. This is a top pick for young people, as well as families and children.

Makarska is such a sun and sea holiday, and it has many luxurious villas for a perfect getaway, and you can find them on this website. Nearby is Mount Biokovo which is very loved by hikers!

3. Islands of Croatia

Yes, we know it’s cheating to put these very independent and self-sufficient destinations under one spot, but hear us out. Islands such as Hvar, Korčula, Brač, and others have everything to offer – sand beaches, cliff jumping, sailing, hiking, and are easily reachable by ferry.

Many of them have must-see bays, coves, and caves you do not want to miss out on. They also offer historic heritages protected under UNESCO.

4. Split

You have probably heard of this one by now, but did you know its nickname is “Mediterranean Flower”? Rich in Roman history because of the Diocletian Palace in the centre, the old town is the romantic spot you’re looking for – with all those marble walkways, buildings, cafes, shops, and bars.

5. Istria

Yeah, we definitely think a whole region could be your destination! Istria is too abundant in culture and scenery to only be simmered down to one city.

The places you need to see are Pula, Rovinj, Poreč, and smaller towns like Motovun. Pula has the Amphitheater, Rovinj the colourful buildings and you will try the best truffles in the Motovun area.

6. Zagreb

Maybe you’re not really all for those beach holiday spots, so Zagreb would be the pick for you. Being the capital, its got many modern attractions in the Lower Town, while the Upper town is the historic centre.

The symbols of Zagreb are the Ban Jelačić Square, the Stone Gate, the Dolac Market, and others. In the proximity are also the Plitvice Lakes, which should definitely be on your to-do list!

Whether you are looking to visit those Mediterranean cities, enjoy the gastronomy, relax on the beach or enjoy the cities up north with a special tradition, Croatia has it all for you!

We’ll just leave you with the fact that it is one of the countries with the most award-winning destinations for environmentally friendly and sustainable tourism.

Italy, as soon as people hear the name of this country, they feel the desire to visit it. The most charming European destination in all.

Italy, as soon as people hear the name of this country, they feel the desire to visit it. The most charming European destination in all. Italy has all the ingredients of an ideal tourist destination from beaches, mountains, historical and archaeological landmarks, culture, civilization, and luxury villas to stay in, not to mention the cuisine is the most delicious, most famous, and most demanded around the world.

Aside from the many charming places that you should not miss visiting in Italy, in this article we will also talk about the rituals that make your holiday in Italy a perfect and unforgettable memory.

Places to visit in Italy

https://www.pexels.com/

Venice

Venice, located in the north of Italy, is an ideal choice to start your holiday in Italy. This charming city offers Italian tourist beauty at its best. Venice is famous for its water taxi boats that sail through the canals. Tourists flock annually to take this tour and simulate the beauty of Venice, which was embodied in the films.

It is also characterized by cobblestone roads. So it should be at the top of the list. When you visit Venice, you must tour the canals and discover the narrow side streets away from the crowds of tourists, where you will be fascinated by the alleys and houses with old architecture. You will also find many of the locals’ favorite authentic restaurants. And to see the view of the city from a high place, you should not miss a visit to the large bell tower in Piazza San Marco, where you will take special pictures of your trip.

Also, you can choose where to stay, either in the city center, outside, in an old building, or a luxury hotel. The busiest hotels are located in Piazza San Marco. At the same time, the island of Giudecca has the most lavish hotels.

Florence

https://www.pexels.com/

Like Venice, Florence is a city to fall in love with, where you can wander the streets and be dazzled by the ancient architecture that you will find in every corner of the city—eating gelato, known for its deliciousness. And visit the famous Duomo. Also, you must visit the Bardini villa garden, climb the hills to enjoy the view of the city, which is filled with medieval walls. Don’t forget to visit Tuscany, where you will tour the famous vineyards on horseback and sample one of the best wines in the world—and see the hills and olive groves and contemplate the magic of the Italian countryside.

While visiting Florence, you must pass by the Cinque Terre, five tiny villages with small colorful houses characterized by their cliffs with a breathtaking view. In Florence, the train ride will allow you to discover the tourist areas easily, so it will be easy to go to the Leaning Tower of Pisa and take some pictures while doing the famous (pushing the tower) position.

Rome

https://www.pexels.com/

Whoever visits Italy can not miss a visit to its capital, Rome. Rome is full of historical and archaeological monuments. Like the famous Roman Amphitheater and Trevi Fountain. This richness of historical attractions makes the tourists fascinated by Rome. In addition, Rome stands out as a city that exudes history, culture, and art. So, through a walking tour, you will see the famous Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, and the Pyramid of Cestius, which is a witness to Rome’s attempt to introduce the Egyptian pyramids into its architecture.

You can also visit the ruins of the Baths of Caracalla and see the historic theater. Rome also has a cuisine known for its delicious and authentic Italian dishes such as pizza, spaghetti, etc. And if you are thirsty for historical monuments, Pompeii in Rome will quench your thirst. This city is rich in ruins and ruins left by the Roman Empire.

The Amalfi coast, Sorento, Positano

https://www.pexels.com/

Italy has no better place than the Amalfi Coast for a refreshing Italian holiday; the cities on the cliff overlooking the blue sea have an irresistible charm. One of the most beautiful is Sorrento. So make it your home and enjoy discovering the rest of the Amalfi Coast. The seaside city of Sorrento sits on top of a cliff facing Naples, and it’s crowded with tourists who spend their summer vacation.

The main square is suitable for enjoying lively scenes of the vibrant city where street artists abound. You can take a walk to discover the narrow and winding alleys and clothing stores. There are many old cathedrals. It is also rich in restaurants perched on the cliffs overlooking the sea, famous for serving fresh seafood. Positano is a charming Italian village stretching along the Amalfi Coast, not far from Sorrento.

You can get there by public transport or rent a scooter. It is a romantic beach town rich in hotels, restaurants, and distinctive shops. You can enjoy visiting art galleries and eating pizza. Or spend the day relaxing on the Italian beach in the sun. A night in one of the hotels set on the cliffs is ideal for enjoying the sea view.

Summary

Whether you are a fan of history and archeology, vineyards, mountains, the coast, or even a fan of the famous Italian cuisine, there is no doubt that you will find what you want in Italy. All you have to do is plan your vacation meticulously. But, then, not to waste a minute without discovering the Italian beauty in every city and village.

Naples is full of delightful sights and it is really manageable to visit many points of interest during your stay.

Oh the charm of Italy! Each time I have gone it has been a challenge to make a decision on which cities to hit, because they just all have so much to offer. As you’re planning your destinations, Naples is not to be missed! Naples is full of delightful sights and it is really manageable to visit many points of interest during your stay.

You can enjoy Naples any time of the year and arriving is easily accessible; however, late spring or fall are the best times to avoid the crowds and enjoy lower temperatures. There are some great options through fly dubai tickets to get a start on exploring.

Although Naples is the third-largest city in Italy, it is great for exploring by foot. There is so much that can be seen even with a short visit. Many of the sights are within walking distance of one another. Six of Michelangelo’s churches, the National Archeological Museum, the Capodimonte Museum, Castles, and San Carlo Opera House are all one simple walk away.

Getting around Naples is surprisingly easy, with a well-organized system of public services that includes a Metro system, bus lines, taxi services, and an electric streetcar system. For those who want an experience on the water, the city also has many different boat excursions you can take to see the city from another point of view.

As you plan out the dreamy details of your visit, I highly recommend making sure these sights are on your list.

Must-See Churches

With an amazing 16 churches, Naples has the highest concentration of masterpieces by Michelangelo across Italy. You can really get lost admiring the incredible paintings, sculptures, and architecture of the Michelangelo churches.

When narrowing down the overwhelming list of churches to visit, there are six Michelangelo churches in Naples you really shouldn’t miss:

Sant’Angelo a Nilo,

Santi Severino e Sossio,

San Giovanni a Carbonara,

San Mango al Majorr,

Santa Maria di Montesanto, and

San Lorenzo Maggiore.

National Archeological Museum

A visit to Naples isn’t complete without a stop at the National Archeological Museum, which is an easy 10-minute walk from the city center. There are so many things to explore, you could spend an immense amount of time to truly see it all.

On your first visit, I’d recommend hitting the museum’s highlights and setting aside another day to poke around in more detail. That way you can cover more ground without it being so overwhelming.

Castles

Naples is home to some impressive castles. The Castel Nuovo, also called Maschio Angioino, is an imposing medieval building which was once home to the nobles of Naples.

The Castel dell’Ovo, on the other hand, is one of the oldest castles in Europe. It sits perched on the magnificent Bay of Naples. It’s important to know that you must book tickets in advance for a set time slot, so be sure to plan ahead.

Make sure to check hours of operation before you go, as hours are reduced over the weekend. You don’t want to be disappointed if you don’t plan around the castle’s operating hours.

Mount Vesuvius

No visit to Naples would be complete without an ascent of Vesuvius, an active volcano. Vesuvius towers above the Bay of Naples, about 45 minutes outside of Naples. From its summit you can peer into its main crater and see plumes of smoke rising from fissures in the jagged rocks.

This is a relatively easy hike, easier than it looks, depending on your level of physical ability. There is also an intermittent bus service if you prefer. Allow about an hour and a half to complete the hike and take time to enjoy the views.

This is another destination requiring scheduled time slots, so make sure to plan well and secure a time in advance, especially during peak times.

Pompeii

Visiting Pompeii from Naples is pretty simple. You can hop on the Circumvesuviana train at the Garibaldi station, located in the center of town. Travel time is about 45 minutes to Pompeii, but keep in mind despite the short distance, you can easily fill up a whole day exploring the area.

Be aware there are actually two separate entrances to Pompeii and the gates are about a 20-minute walk from each other. I suggest buying your ticket online and also getting an audio guide. You will be able to skip the lines and save some time.

Last but not least, make sure you try some authentic Neapolitan pizza before you go home! It’s a must!

No matter how much or how little you pack into your trip, Naples will leave a charming impression on you. Enjoy its treasures!

Ever since COVID-19 hit the world, traveling internationally has had additional procedural restrictions.

Ever since COVID-19 hit the world, traveling internationally has had additional procedural restrictions. The requirements and policies for air travel have been changing with the continuous rise in cases. Currently, since most countries are making an effort to vaccinate their populations, air travel is now slowly picking up pace as it has become increasingly safe to travel again. However, the UK and the US have made additional changes to their restrictions.

Here are 6 important things you need to know before traveling to or from the UK/US.

Checking Travel Advice

It’s better to keep yourself updated with the latest information and the recent changes being made to restrictions on travel. Whether you’re visiting the US or the UK or flying back from a trip, it’s essential to check and follow foreign travel advice. This is because it can help you stay safe and plan for your trip accordingly. Since there are more risks involved with traveling internationally, it’s crucial to follow the procedures of the airline as well as that of your destination.

Covid Test

As per the instructions given in both countries, passengers are required to show a negative COVID-19 test result before boarding the flight. You’ll either need to get the test done one day or three days before travel, depending on whether you’re vaccinated or not. Especially if you have any of the three covid symptoms, like temperature, cough, or loss of sense of taste and smell, getting a PCR test done is highly necessary. This also applies to people who have been in close contact with an infected individual or with someone who’s showing symptoms of being infected.

Lateral Flow Test

If you don’t have any symptoms of coronavirus and are fully vaccinated, you can take a lateral flow test (LFT) instead of a PCR test. These tests are cheaper in comparison and can be purchased from any private provider. To be allowed to travel, passengers are required to show images of their antigen test UK to their private provider, and if the result turns out to be positive, they need to take a PCR test. If you’ve already bought a PCR test, you don’t need to buy the LFT one. The result needs to be sent and verified by the company they purchased the test from.

Proving Vaccination Status

Passengers who have had their complete dosage of vaccination against COVID-19 are allowed to travel to the US and UK, provided that at least 14 days have passed since the last dosage was administered. However, wherever you decide to get the vaccination, it is essential that they meet the conditions for travel in that country. The vaccine administered should either be from UK/US vaccination programs or from other international vaccination programs, with proof of vaccination for traveling overseas. It is important that you keep all proof of vaccinations like vaccination certificates along with other travel documents with you while traveling internationally.

Children’s Safety

Children are allowed to travel to the US/UK under certain conditions. Firstly, all children below the age of 4 can travel even if they are not vaccinated and do not need to be quarantined upon arrival. For children between the ages of 5 and 17 who are traveling from countries with approved proof of vaccination list, only a COVID-19 test a day or two before arrival is required. For other countries, COVID tests are required before traveling, on the day or before the second day of arrival, on the eighth day after arrival, and quarantine for 10 days at the place of stay in the US/UK.

After Arrival in the US/UK

Once you do return to your place of stay, it is important for you to realize that air travel significantly increases your chances of being exposed to the virus. It is recommended for you to quarantine for at least 7 days, even if your COVID test result is negative, as the test result can be a false negative. If, however, you decide to not take the COVID test, you should quarantine for 10-15 days and look out for symptoms of COVID. If your test comes back positive, immediately isolate yourself from others and get proper treatment from your healthcare provider to manage symptoms.

As life slowly moves back to normal after the COVID pandemic, air travel is now picking up pace again after the majority of the counties are vaccinating their populations against this disease. It is, therefore, absolutely necessary to ensure complete vaccination as well as adherence to precautions for traveling safely.

If you’re looking to go for a visit to this must-see location, here are some of the top places to not miss out on.

One of the most beautiful places in the world, the Italian island of Sardinia is a place of natural wonder and excitement. With miles of beaches and turquoise-coloured Mediterranean water, it’s also home to some incredible villages, hiking opportunities and incredible ancient structures. The second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, it’s located west of the Italian Peninsula and south of the French island of Corsica.

Definitely a fantastic location to take photos, enjoy its natural wonders and learn about the vestiges of the Nuragic civilization. There is nowhere else in the world like it, which is why it’s frequently visited by tourists every single year who want to take in its splendour for themselves. It’s also a favourite spot for writers, photographers, artists and more who are inspired creatively by the environment and its history.

If you’re looking to go for a visit to this must-see location, here are some of the top places to not miss out on.

Mamoiada

This lovely little town is situated in the Barbagia hills and famous for its carnival costumes. Mamuthones wear masks, black leather and large bells and Issohadores wear red-and-black outfits and hats. It’s definitely a cultural sight like no other, so well worth checking out when you’re in Sardinia. You’ll not regret it and will return home with some incredible stories to tell of what you’ve seen!

Neptune’s Grotto

This seaside staircase known as “goat steps” (or escala del cabirol) is a mystical trip down into one of the world’s most impressive natural wonders. Based near Alghero, this grotto takes its name from the Roman god of the sea, Neptune. Once inside, visitors can experience stalactites and stalagmites as well as a large saltwater lake, making for an otherworldly experience for all who enter.

For those who aren’t so keen on climbing down and up the 656 steps, you can take a pot from the harbour in the Port of Alghero if it’s a calm day!

Take in views from a yacht

If you’re looking for an extra luxurious experience to add to your stay, it’s a think whether you should charter a yacht in Sardinia.

From the beautiful mountainous landscapes of Supremonte to the white sandy beaches and emerald sea of Porto Istana, you can witness all the most amazing sights up close and personal by a chartered yacht. Live life like a celebrity from this very Instagram-friendly experience. You definitely won’t regret it!

Castelsardo

Based on the northwest coast, this town is one of the prettiest in Italy and features spa hotels, beaches and a castle. You can also visit Roccia dell’Elefante, an incredible rock formation as well as the Museo dell’Intreccio Mediterraneo — a museum that is completely dedicated to the art of basket weaving which is so popular on the island.

La Pelosa Beach

It’s pretty much impossible to name just one beach as the most beautiful in all of Sardinia. But La Pelosa Beach is definitely one of them. Beautiful water and sand are one side, with incredible Mediterranean flora and fauna, and a view of Asinara island on the other. It’s definitely one of the hotspots for becah lovers, as well as those who like architecture as it features a 17th century tower.

Tempio Pausania

Tempio is transformed over three days of winter with carnival. A celebration featuring parades, floats and masked performers, it’s like nothing else out there. Keep an eye out for Lu Linzolu Cupaltatu — the female figure seen walking along the streets wrapped in a sheet. Also Ghjolghuju Puntoglio — who marks the end of carnival celebrations as well as the beginning of Lent.

The murals of Orgosolo

The buildings in the town of Orgosolo, based in the Barbagia mountain region, are a canvas to some amazing murals by its inhabitants. With work starting from 1960, you’ll find depictions of daily life, creative ideas and political statements painted across the walls. It’s an incredible sight and worth going for a visit, especially if you’re an art-fan. There’s really nothing else like it.

Gola di Gorropu

The majestic natural wonder is often called the Grand Canyon of Italy. Located on the Supramonte mountain at almost 1,500ft down and a mile wide, it’s an astonishing view with trails to hike and rivers to swim in. It’s a fantastic spot, especially for those who enjoy a nature walk that’s completely out of the ordinary.

Cala Brandinchi

Often called Little Tahiti, this beach is a glorious spot to visit and soak up some sun. A little spot of paradise that can be reached by charter a yacht from Sicily, you can visit private beach clubs and rent out umbrellas and sun loungers to get the most out of the day.

Su Nuraxi di Barumini

Nuraghe — ancient, mystical structures — are found all across Sardinia. Su Nuraxi is part of the Barumini archaeological site and is considered by many to be ones of the best examples of Bronze Age villages. Listed as a Unesco World Heritage site, it’s an impressive view and a great one to check out whether you’re a historian fan or just want to see something otherworldly and impressive.

In this article we talk about the main changes made by Brexit to the immigration system.

Brexit came as a shock to a lot of people. That’s unsurprising, given that it was the first time when a country left the EU. In the 2016 referendum, it turned out that a slight majority of voters, 51.9% approved leaving the European Union.

Still, it took four more years for the UK to officially withdraw. Brexit had a tremendous impact on the United Kingdom’s economy, but that’s only one of its consequences. It made it also more difficult for foreign-born nationals to travel to the UK and work there.

However, as there is a lot of confusion surrounding this topic, we have prepared this article to explain the most common questions about the consequences of Brexit for foreign nationals.

Photo by Paul Fiedler on Unsplash

What Are The Main Changes Made by Brexit to the Immigration System?

The main changes made by Brexit to the immigration system are as follows:

If you are a citizen of a country that is not in the European Economic Area or Switzerland, you will need to apply for a work permit.

You will have to undergo checks by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) before you can be granted a visa. This will happen regardless of whether you are a new or existing employee.

UKVI will no longer issue certificates of sponsorship. Only employers who already have sponsorship applications in progress will be able to make them. The UKVI will not accept any new applications for certificates of sponsorship.

If you were studying in the UK and had applied for post-study work, you will not need to make an application if you have already begun your studies.

EU citizens will no longer be given preferential treatment under the Tier 2 visa system. They will need to pass the Resident Labour Market Test to stay in the UK after Brexit.

The UK government will remove students from the Tier 4 visa limit.

What Are the Rules Regarding Visas and Immigration for EU Citizens?

Before Brexit, EU citizens could travel freely between EU countries and work there without any restrictions. But now, due to Brexit, this has changed.

From 1st January 2021, all EU citizens who are not UK citizens will have to apply for settled status to continue living in the United Kingdom.

From that date, they will also be required to show their passports if they need to prove their identity when dealing with public authorities.

What are Settled Status and Pre-settled Status?

Settled status is a UK immigration status that gives someone indefinite leave to remain in the United Kingdom. If you have settled status, you can live and work in the UK indefinitely.

Pre-settled status is a new status announced by the Home Office. It is granted to those people who have already been living in the UK before Brexit. Pre-settled status allows them to remain in the UK until they apply for settled status. The Home Office will start accepting applications for pre-settled status from 2021.

There is also discretionary leave to remain, which the home office grants outside of immigration rules. That allows someone to live and work in the UK for a short or limited period of time. Brexit has did not affect the status of discretionary leave to remain with the last significant changes to this ruling being implemented in 2012.

What About EU Citizens Who Moved to the UK Before 2021?

EU citizens who arrived in the UK before 31st December 2020 will be eligible for a temporary status, which means they can stay and work in the UK until June 2021. After this date, they must apply for pre-settled status.

How Can I Apply for Settled Status?

EU citizens who want to stay in the UK after Brexit should apply for settled status before June 2021. This means that they must send their application before 30th June 2021, at the latest.

After this date, there will be no way of applying for settled status. You can apply for settled status online, using an app, or by post. You must show the Home Office a valid passport and proof that you are exercising your treaty rights in the UK. You will also need to prove that you have been living in the country since before 31st December 2020. The documents you need will depend on your situation.

What if I Am Not Eligible for Settled Status? How Can I Extend My Stay in the UK?

After 30th June 2021, there will be no way of extending your stay in the UK after Brexit.

However, if you are a citizen of an EU member state but are not eligible for pre-settled status, you may still be able to apply for new immigration status. This depends on your current immigration status and whether you can meet the criteria for settlement or pre-settlement.

For example, if you are working in the UK as a Tier 2 visa holder with a sponsor, you may be able to apply for permission to stay after 30th June 2021 as a worker. If your current immigration status is ‘Tier 4’, you might be able to apply for post-study work after that date.

What Happens If I Have Settled Status but Lose My Job?

If you have settled status, it means that you have indefinite permission to live and work in the UK. However, it doesn’t mean that you are entitled to benefits or healthcare.

You will need to apply for a new visa if you want to stay in the UK after losing your job. After Brexit takes place, if you lose your job, you will have to apply for another visa and go through the whole immigration process again.

What about Family Members of EU Citizens Who Have Settled Status? What Happens After Brexit?

EU citizens who have settled status in the United Kingdom won’t need to worry about their family members who joined them after Brexit. Family members of EU nationals who arrive in the UK before 31st December 2020 will be able to apply for settled status without any restrictions.

If they arrive after that date, they will be considered EU citizens and can apply for settled status once it becomes available.

Will I Be Able to Stay in the UK If I Am Currently Studying in the UK?

EU citizens who are currently studying in the UK will not need to apply for a visa after Brexit takes place. They will be able to continue studying until they finish their studies.

It is important to note that if students decide to stay and work in the UK after their studies are over, they will have to apply for new immigration status.

Will EU Students Still Be Able to Receive the Same Funding as Before?

Yes, EU students will still be able to receive the same funding as before. The Home Office has confirmed that students receiving financial support from sources such as HEFCE or UCAS before Brexit will continue to do so.

However, there is one thing that might change after the end of 2020: students who come to the UK before 2021 will be able to apply for funding for the course they are currently attending right now. If they arrive after this date, they will only be able to apply for funding when they arrive at their university.

France is seen as the most romantic country in the world where all kinds of adventures are waiting for you just around the corner. It’s truly worth visiting and exploring.

France is one of the most popular destinations among tourists worldwide, and it’s not surprising. This country really has very diversified things to see, admire and enjoy – beautiful, paradise-like beaches, high mountains to climb or ski, wild forests, lakes, both modern and old, history-packed cities, skyscrapers and castles, luxurious hotels, and secluded cottages in the countryside.

France is seen as the most romantic country in the world where all kinds of adventures are waiting for you just around the corner. It’s truly worth visiting and exploring.

What Is the Best Way To Explore France?

Because of many different attractions, a lot of tourists decide to rent a car in France – independence allows you to really sink in the atmosphere and culture, to see more than you could with any other means of transport.

You can choose when you come and go, what places you want to visit, where you want to stay – you don’t have to worry about timetables, tickets or delays. You’re in charge, and you’re the master of your own vacation.

There are a few things you need to know about driving in France. According to GlobalGrasshopper.com, you would need a pollution sticker if you drive in Paris (you can get it either online or at the gas station). Also, remember that mobile-phone hands-free devices are not allowed when driving.

There are many places where you can’t go by bus or train, but with a car, you don’t have to worry. What’s more, traveling by car saves you money – you can always find a supermarket instead of a restaurant, and you can stay in the countryside where prices are much lower than in the cities.

So what is there to see in France if you decide to go on a road trip?

Fly to Marseille

Marseille is the second-largest city in France and one of the oldest in Europe. Only in the city you can walk around the old port, climb the hill to the Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde to admire amazing views of the city and islands nearby, have a stroll in ancient Roman ruins, or visit the old fort.

If you have a car, you can explore the true wonders of Provence – breathtaking Calanques and lovely port town of Cassis, old and culture-oriented Aix-en-Provence, wonderful lavender fields if you happen to be there in summer, or Arles, where Vincent van Gogh lived and painted.

Fly to Nice

French Riviera is what comes to your mind when you think about luxury. Of course, places like St. Tropez and Cannes are definitely worth visiting, but with your own car, you can discover so much more. Even driving a highway from Nice is an amazing attraction because of the views – on the same day, you can be driving by the sea and between high, rocky mountains.

You never know when you’ll encounter a small lavender field or a hillside vineyard. Also, about 40km from Nice, there’s a little town called Grasse that is famous in the whole world thanks to its perfumeries.

Fly to Tours

Loire Valley is one of the favorite destinations in France. If you rent a car, you can go there from Paris as well (it’s about 3 hours drive), but if you prefer to avoid the capital, you can start your road trip in Tours.

Loire Valley is a region with wonderful views, numerous, often famous castles (many of them you can see in movies), secluded vineyards, and historic villages. This is a must-see for all fans of period dramas, but to be honest, everyone would be impressed by these splendid landscapes.

Explore Brittany

Brittany, one of France’s lesser-known regions, perhaps because of its colder weather, has much to offer to the potential tourists. It’s a homeland of the Celtic nation called Bretons, whose dialect can be found on many road signs in Breton-speaking areas.

Brittany is known for its excellent cuisine, including crêpes, galettes, cotriade, and the region’s traditional drink – cider. It is a perfect place for all fans of Arthurian legends and megalithic monuments like the Carnac stones or the Menhir de Champ-Dolent. You will also not be disappointed when visiting Dinan, a small town located on a hill, charming its visitors with medieval architecture or Château des ducs de Bretagne, beautifully showing the transition from Gothic to Renaissance.

Fly to Corsica

If you don’t find the mainland amusing enough for a road trip, consider flying out to one of France’s islands. Corsica, located on the Mediterranean Sea, is regarded as the “mountain in the sea,” with mountains amounting to two-thirds of the region.

While it is mostly known for being the birthplace of Napoleon, it is also home to beautiful views and distinctive cuisine. Small communes like Speloncato located on hillsides are bound to please all photographers looking for picturesque sceneries. The highest mountain, Monte Cinto, offers panoramic views of European mountain ranges on a clear day.

More on Driving in France

In France, you drive on the right side of the road, and the speed limits are 110-130kph on the motorway, 50-90kph in the rural areas, and 50kph in towns and cities.

The costs of rental cars in France depend on the month and the age of a driver, but you can rent a regular, small car for around 20 euros per day. The minimum age to drive is 18, but most rental agents won’t let you rent a car if you’re younger than 21. There are also driver supplements that you’ll have to pay if you’re under the age of 25 (they vary depending on the agent, from 5 to 30 euros per day).

Apart from that, you have to remember about toll roads prices, but even with all those additional costs, you’ll still save money on food and accommodation. You won’t be bound to any big city where prices are much higher than in the countryside. Besides, isn’t the possibility to see beautiful secluded places worth it all?

In 2019, Hvar won a title for the best island in Europe – the award speaks for itself.

Having 340 sunny days out of 365 possible, visiting Hvar is always a good idea, whether it’s summer, autumn, winter or spring.

Here, you can get the idea of how your journey would look like – where you can go, what you can do, where you can stay, etc. Let’s begin!

A little bit of history

Even though there have been found records in written history from the 4th century BC, some of the remains witness that life on Hvar existed even 3500 years BC.

The Old Town, also known as Pharos, was founded by the Greeks.

The natives were ready to fight, but reinforced Greeks eventually took away the victory – this was the first known naval battle on the Adriatic.

After the Greeks came the Illiryans who kept Pharos as their centre. In the Middle Ages, the history of Hvar was turbulent and it changed various rulers.

Finally, after World War II, Hvar became a part of former Yugoslavia. In that period, hotels, water supply and sanitation appeared on the island.

Today, being a significant part of Croatia, Hvar is becoming more and more famous every day because of its beauties and stories that you need to see and hear.

The culture

As a host to the first public theatre in Europe, Hvar is well known among culture explorers. Its historical sites, such as the Cathedral or Hanibal Lucić’s Summer Residence, turned Hvar to what it is today.

Everywhere you go and whatever turn you decide to take next, you’ll find something amazing, something that will make you experience unforgettable.

People are very friendly and the atmosphere is so warm – it will feel like home.

Sightseeing in Hvar

Španjola Fortress

Overlooking Hvar from the hill, this fortress is also known as Fortica. Must-see not only for the hiking-lovers but for whoever visits Hvar, Fortica is a historical place that today has its own botanical garden with Mediterranean plants.

This 5-minute drive or a 15-minute walk offers you plenty of spots to stop and take a picture, but it also offers you a chance to get to know the history even more!

Pakleni islands

Another must-see attraction, filled with beaches and restaurants, are Pakleni islands. You can get there by taxi boat, or you can rent your boat for the day – whatever your decision is, you’ll equally enjoy it.

Mostly known for Palmižana beach, these islands can give you a different, deeper perspective on Hvar.

Old Town

The heart of the history and home to so many valuable remains is Hvar’s Old Town. From the harbour and promenade to the St. Stephen’s Square, Cathedral, loggia and its clock tower.

There is no direction to which you can turn and not see something.

Other important parts of the Old Town are the Arsenal, home to the first theatre in Croatia, and Franciscan Monastery, containing famous art, a painting of the Last Supper.

If you’re looking for a way to get to know the island as much as possible, you should walk and hike – that way you’ll get the most out of it. Take a walk through its picturesque streets or the lavender fields!

Beaches

If you happen to be in Hvar during summer, it’s time to head out to the beach!

Around Hvar

Pakleni islands, as we said before, are well-known for their beaches and coves where you can experience a real summer paradise.

Ždrilca, Palmižana and Mlini are only a few out of many beaches! Whether you’re with your family, your friends or you’re all alone, these beaches will make you feel relaxed and will recharge your batteries for the upcoming adventures.

As they are very popular among tourists, don’t be surprised if you walk into the very crowded beach.

On Hvar

On Hvar, don’t miss out on the opportunity to go swimming in the crystal clear sea on the Zaraće beach, the best beach on Hvar.

Even though it is well-known, not a lot of people go here because of its location – you will need a bus ride and a 10-minute walk.

If, however, you decide to go, you can escape to your own oasis and absorb the sun as much as you like.

Another popular but not very crowded beach is Dubovica, a pebble beach where you can take a break from all the swimming and sunbathing and go for lunch at the restaurant right on the beach!

Naturists, here’s a treat – Robinson’s beach, secluded and hidden part of the island, very popular among swimmers and sailboats!

To-do list

Except for beaches, sightseeing and getting to know the culture, there are plenty of other things to do that will make your experience as good as it can get.

Partying at hidden coves is something that all the youth is looking for when they visit Hvar. And don’t worry, they’re in the right place!

As Hvar has many beach bars, such as Hula Hula, you can party whenever you wish. Many of these coves are best accessed via taxi boat or speedboat, so you can as well enjoy the sea voyage while arriving.

For anyone who wants to reward their palate and get the best pastime for your taste buds, go wine tasting! Sample some of Croatia finest wines and learn about the way they are made.

Visit Jelsa! Often in the shadows of Hvar town, Jelsa is a picturesque beauty hidden in the middle of Hvar island. Jelsa is filled with hotels, bars, restaurants and other options that guarantee a fun time!

Rent a scooter! For adventurers, renting a scooter is definitely the best possible option to go and do whatever you want! Whether you want to explore the town or its wild side, go to the beach or climb hills, a scooter is your way to go!

Finally, adrenaline-lovers, Hvar offers you skydiving, scuba diving, kayaking and other extreme sports to feel the blood travel through your body – to feel alive!

Restaurants

Hvar is the perfect place to combine different tastes and wishes. One day, you can go taste traditional Dalmatian dishes, the next day you can eat amazing creative dishes from different parts of the world, and the day after you can just take a bite at one of the restaurants on the beaches, just to get the energy to continue enjoying life.

Fig, Ko Doma, Dalmatino, Lola Street Food and Odos are just a few of the restaurants to go to that will leave you full and satisfied!

Accommodation

Being one of the most visited islands and places to go on vacation, Hvar is well prepared for hosting anyone who comes here.

On the other hand, if you want to explore as much of Adriatic as you can, look for a villa in Split, from where you can get to many other islands!

Here, you can enjoy your private accommodation, such as an apartment or villa, or you can make your hotel or hostel reservation. You have plenty of options to choose from, so wherever you want to be, you can.

You can enjoy the view from the sea, or you can escape to the wild side of the interior of the island and isolate yourself to be at peace.

If you’ve fallen in love with Adriatic like many others, and you’ve been thinking about staying, you can always purchase construction land or find your new dream home right here, in Dalmatia!

Amsterdam is a great city to hang out with kids. Parents ride bikes with their children. Its gardens are perfect backdrops for many children and it is more common to take one’s children to a restaurant or food market. This makes Amsterdam a super family-friendly destination for a city tour!

Photo by Guus Baggermans on Unsplash

So, book your flights through Cathay Pacific and read this list of 10 family-friendly things to do in Amsterdam.

Tuschinski

This is a more surreal and beautiful movie theatre in Amsterdam. Its interior is well wort
seeing, especially for the fans of art decor. The lights bring an artistic and flamboyant
atmosphere. The seats are very comfy and the sounds are good enough to keep children awake.
Elders can enjoy a fancy beer before a movie! Even if you are not planning to watch a movie it is
worth the visit to see its mesmerizing architecture. Grab your kid a drink and a snack from the
snack bar for free until the movie begins!

NEMO Science Museum

Looking for some educational stuff with fun? Go to the NEMO science museum. It exhibits a
great balance between fun and education exploration. Adults will feel as they’ve gone back to
school days but it’s worth a lot of people with scientific curiosity. The roof restaurant
overlooking Amsterdam is open for everyone to get refreshed. The museum itself is full of
interesting facts and self-experiments as well which you try yourself for extra fun. This setup is
of five floors where Science seems easy to understand!

Artis Zoo

It’s an awesome zoo right in the centre of Amsterdam. Artis is all about nature and freedom as
almost all the animals are kept in very spacious cages where they can walk here and there. There
are lots of animals including elephants, chimpanzees, gorillas, sea lions, insects, jaguar, wolves,
giraffe, zebra, kangaroo and an aquarium as well. This is a must-visit place for every family in
Amsterdam. Lion feeding is the coolest thing here. Walking through the never-ending pathways
gives much relaxation. Overall it’s an impressive home for animals with lots of places to sit and
eat. Animals seem to be happy to live here!

Tropenmuseum

Finding a way to spend a rainy afternoon? Head to Tropenmuseum. This is a stunning museum
with a very interesting contemporary approach. It will mostly give you knowledge about gender
exposition, slavery and colonization. It also houses artefacts from Dutch colonies like Indonesia,
Papua and New Guinea. Wooden facemasks and wooden canoes and those artefacts tell a huge story with some beliefs. To make your children aware of the Netherland’s colonization plus cultural aspects of historical and modern-day, Tropenmuseum is the right place.

Canal Boat Tours

Take a look at the picturesque Amsterdam from the waterways! There is no better option to see
the city on a sunny day other than by boat. It will donate you a different but pleasant experience
to appreciate the attractions of the water. Every tour combines foods and drinks. You can arrange
the tour from the hotels in Amsterdam that you check-in. A better way is purchasing a hop-on,
hop-off ticket so that it accompanies you to many attractions.

Photo by Adrien Olichon on Unsplash

Anne Frank Huis

This is probably one of the most popular museums in Amsterdam. The surreal feeling you get
after reading the diary of Anne Frank appears in front of you when you enter this place. So it is a
very touchy place to all the peeps out there who have read or heard her story. The museum’s
attempt of showing how Anne Frank and her family lived for entirely 2 tragic years inside a
house is seen successful. This is a memorial which must be visited by everyone in Amsterdam
with respect.

Vondel Park

Kids looking for a place to run and chill? Head to the VondelPark. It is a nice reach between
wall-to-wall urban buildings in Amsterdam. Vondel Park is full of greenery, wide lawns and
places to sit and enjoy. The place is big enough that even with so many people, it never feels so
crowded. Vondel Park is great for biking, inline skating, having a picnic or just having a nap. If
you are staying in Amsterdam, come here with your whole family for jogging or relaxing!

Amsterdamse Bos

Visiting the Netherlands during summer months? Amsterdamse Bostheater must be a definite
travel destination for you. It’s an open-air theatre with a forest in the backdrop. It usually releases
a new film every summer month. It is possible to dine in a nearby restaurant. Since performances
are done in open air concerning the weather before the visit is essential. The audience can
withstand a capacity of 1500 people at once. You must get that chill by watching a performance
among trees and under the stars!

Goat Farm Ridammerhoeve

This is such a nice and cosy place to spend time with kids and families. It is quite a big farm
where goats and chickens walk around. Your children will love to cuddle and feed those baby
goats. Next to the farm is a forest where you can walk or do a picnic. You must try its ice-cream
made of goat milk. Visiting here on a weekend is a good option. Don’t forget to buy some
homemade cheese to take home!

Madame Tussauds Amsterdam

All the Madame Tussauds museums in the world are almost identical. The wax museum in
Amsterdam is worth a visit if you are interested in seeing some Dutch personalities. I suggest
this as a great way to make historical figures more familiar with one’s children. Those statues
look so real and the building is so cool. People enjoy clicking pictures with celebrity statues and
other props. To spend a rainy afternoon with your family, Madame Tussauds Amsterdam is a
brilliant option.

The Baltic Countries are a Northern European gem that encompass three countries:
Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. These former remnants of the Soviet regime are known to
be somewhat secluded. While still open for tourism, you will not find masses of tourists
pouring through the streets. Thus, visiting them makes for a peaceful and relaxing
experience.

Tallinn, Estonia is magical in the winter
Photo by Jaanus Jagomägi on Unsplash

But as you would do your due diligence before visiting any other foreign country, you’d do
yourself a favor by taking care of the following before your trip:Study Up on the Culture
The three countries are independent states with different cultural heritage and language. In
fact, all three managed to retain their independence in 1991, and they are very much
proud of their heritage.

While each is unique in their own right, Estonia arguably shares the closest resemblance
to Finland. Indeed, it implies a higher standard of living, so factor this in your expected
living costs

Decide on the Best Time to Visit

While a large part of the decision will be based on whatever your schedule allows for, the
consensus is that the optimal time for visiting is between April and September. Unless you
prefer the winter’s cold grip, this is when the weather is at its finest.

Photo by Jaanus Jagomägi on Unsplash

During summer, expect the temperatures to linger around 25 degrees. The winters, on the
other hand, tend to be harsh and not for the faint-of-heart.

Check Your Transport Options

Unless you have a local friend, and you’ve agreed to have them drive you around, you will
need to rely on public transport. So check the bus routes in advance and plan accordingly.
Hitch-hiking is not that popular in the Baltics, but the distances between cities are pretty
short (from Vilnius to Riga 4 hours in a bus, for example), so trains and buses should
suffice.

There is always the option of calling a taxi, but compared to trains and buses, it will cost
you a lot more. If you’re no stranger to handling foreign apps, there is always the option of
hailing a cab via one of the local ride-sharing apps. In Estonia, Uber is a big one, but there is also Bolt, its local variant.

Have a Way to Break the Language Barrier

While you might hear Latvians, Lithuanians, and Estonians speaking Russian, do not
make the mistake of confusing them with being one. Although they have a Russian-
influenced history, their culture is unique to their nation.

Either way, it’s almost a given that you’ll find someone speaking English in all three
countries. Even so, if you don’t know a word of their language, a good trick is to install a
translation app that can translate spoken language on the fly.

Check the Local Wi-Fi Coverage and Data Plans

Whether you’re going to be taking some of your work with you or not, having a way to
access the world wide web is a must in this day and age. The best practice is to pick up a
local SIM card with a generous data package to enjoy your favorite online content without
worries.

To save a bit of money, check where you can expect to find local Wi-Fi hotspots. Do bear
in mind that every time you decide to connect to public Wi-Fi, you are exposing your
sensitive private data to interception and theft. Therefore, educate yourself on what is a
VPN and install one on your smart devices before you take off.

Visit a Currency Exchange

While you can always exchange your money at the airport when you arrive, try to take care
of this in your own country to see if they offer you a better exchange rate. Baltic countries
belong to the European Union, and thus they use euros, so it shouldn’t be much of a
problem.

Photo by Markus Spiske on Unsplash

Get Your Visa Sorted out

Unless you’re a European citizen (all of which get to stay for as long as they like), you will
need to get the appropriate visa for your type of trip. Depending on the purpose of your
visit, there are all sorts of permits, and the regulations may change every couple of
months, so it’s imperative to check the current state of affairs and get one that has you
covered.

Do bear in mind that, even as a European citizen, you’re still going to need to register your
stay if its duration exceeds three months.

Book Your Accommodation

There is the old wisdom of always booking your hotels and trips in advance if you want to
secure the best prices, so be sure to keep this in mind. While you’re unlikely to run out of
options upon the day of your arrival, the costs will always reflect it and may, in some
cases, even double.

For hotels, booking a week or two in advance should suffice. Airbnb is available in the
Baltics too, and if you travel alone and want to meet locals, you can always try
Couchsurfing.

Stock Up on Entertainment

Let’s get this out of the way right now to avoid disappointment later: the Baltics are not into
football all that much. Basketball is the sport of choice for Lithuanians (their second
religion, as they say), and Latvians love their ice hockey.

So if you’re big on sports in general, keep in mind the local scene may or may not deliver
what you want. The workaround, of course, is to stock up on other forms of entertainment;
whether it be a Netflix subscription, books, or movies, be sure to take some with you.

Conclusion

From stunning architecture to tongue-twisting local cuisine, the Baltic countries offer
something for all tastes and preferences. So do take the time to visit and enjoy everything
they have to offer – you won’t regret it!

Thinking about retiring in Portugal? This guide will help you on your journey.

With a temperate, Mediterranean climate year-round, gorgeous coastline, pleasant people, delicious cuisine, and the cheapest cost of living Western Europe, there are few better places to retire than Portugal.

Photo by Hugo Sousa on Unsplash

Portugal is almost nine hundred years old, with a distinct culture and a fascinating history. In this Mediterranean country, you can find impressive monuments and culture everywhere, and the food is as diverse and creative as its French and Italian counterparts – reflecting a huge amount of cultural influence brought during the Age of Discovery.

Public services and infrastructure are very good – especially the Public Health System, which is free for all residents. And the country ranks in the top-5 countries of the Global Peace Index, clearly demonstrating that it is one of the safest places in the world.

Getting excited about retiring in Portugal? I don’t blame you. Read on…

WHAT ARE THE BEST AREAS TO RETIRE IN PORTUGAL?

Most Popular: Algarve

The three most popular areas for foreigners to retire or invest in real estate in Portugal are its two main cities: Lisbon (the capital) and Porto (the second city), and the Algarve region. We’re picking Algarve among these three assuming that you don’t need to be close to a big urban area in your retirement.

Algarve, Portugal | Photo by Julia Solonina on Unsplash

Algarve has been, for almost six decades, the main tourist area of Portugal. Ever since the sixties, British people have come to play golf, to spend some days in the seaside and to retire.

In 2019, for the whopping fifth year in a row, the region has won the World Travel Award as Europe’s Leading Beach Destination. The World Travel Awards are the most prestigious awards for world tourism, and are usually called “the Oscars of Tourism.” French and Italians are now also arriving, but you still can find places not hurt by mass tourism or development.

The warm climate (mild even in the winter) and the lovely beaches are just a few of the factors gathering visitors. Those looking for luxury real estate find developments throughout the region. And according to the New York Times, the demand rose nearly 5 percent during the first quarter of 2018.

Known for the beaches, this 125-mile shore region has plenty of diversity. You can find urban beaches like Praia da Rocha (Portimão), vast desert beaches between Faro and Tavira (the Ria Formosa Natural Park), and also the amazing sights of the St. Vincent and Sagres cliffs.

If you fancy living in the countryside, take to the hills and historic villages like Querença or Alte. You’ll be a 30-minute drive from the beach, but you’ll feel in a different world, away from the globalized crowds of Albufeira or Portimão. Gambling is allowed in Portugal; you can find three licensed land-based casinos in Algarve (Portimão, Vilamoura, and Monte Gordo).

The region has its own international airport, the Faro Airport/FAO. Although there are no direct flights from the US, you can pick a direct flight to Lisbon. Then, you can either rent a car, take a bus, or get a quick 45-minute flight to Faro. The A22 highway crosses the region from west to east, connecting to the A-49 Spanish highway at the border.

Up-and-Coming: Oeste

The Oeste (literally, “West”) region of Portugal is becoming the new hub for foreigners to invest in real estate in Portugal. Here there is a combination of three factors: the countryside, the sea and the closeness to Lisbon (an average one hour-drive from the airport). If you long for a quiet place, able to reach the sea by car in a few minutes and the capital city in less than an hour, this will be your choice.

Óbidos, Portugal | Photo by Z S on Unsplash

Gastronomy, wines, history, and culture are solid points for the Oeste region. This includes, in its territory and vicinity, plenty of World Heritage monuments (Mafra, Alcobaça, Batalha). The walled streets of Óbidos invite you to feel like you’re in the Middle Ages, and bubble with cultural events throughout the year.

You might consider to set yourself up on the beach, by the Atlantic. The resorts of Óbidos (Praia D’El Rey, Royal Óbidos) await your visit, with their golf courses with a sea view. And Oeste is a famed surfing and beach spot. This is where Garrett McNamara, the giant wave surfer, came in 2011 to beat the record of the biggest surfed wave in history, in the fishing town of Nazaré. However, the town did not need McNamara to become famous, as it is a seaside destination for decades. In fact, in 1948 a little-known photographer named Stanley Kubrick visited and fell in love.

Stroll a little to the south, and you’ll find S. Martinho do Porto, a perfect shell-like bay of very calm waters. Just like Óbidos lagoon, a few miles south. Then you get the great spots for competitive surfing, in Peniche (home for one of the Rip Curl World Pro yearly stages) and Ericeira.

In the towns and villages of the countryside, you can find bargains to invest and to live in, always ensuring that you’re near the A8 highway that takes you to Lisbon. Locals are already welcoming a steady but smooth wave of tourists. After all, this is not the capital – this is the countryside by the capital.

Most Underrated: Alentejo

The southern plains of Portugal are not a tourist hotspot – at least not yet. Local politicians lament the depopulation effects. Industries are few and small scales. Large scale agriculture is still the main economic activity, and it was given a good impulse by the Alqueva Dam and its big lake.

Évora, Portugal | Photo by Robert Pruteanu on Unsplash

But in Portugal, depopulation doesn’t mean depression. Local town halls provide a minimal number of public jobs, and the existent, active entrepreneurs aren’t going anywhere. The result is that foreigners find small but well-functioning towns, with all kind of services working smoothly. You can be sure that you’ll find a good cafe or restaurant at the end of the road.

There are about 750.000 inhabitants in a territory comprising roughly 12,000 square miles (almost the size of Connecticut, 3.5 million people). Low-density population ensures that you never get rushed for anything. You can cross the 10-mile road between Pavia and Vimieiro and not find a single car.

This is a land of white-washed villages and towns, punctuated with medieval castles, built during Islamic rule (which ceased here in the 13th century) and kept after the Christian Portuguese conquest. Évora, classified as a World Heritage site, is the principal city of the region – but still maintains its medieval walls surrounding the historic center.

The Alqueva lake is now welcoming beachgoers and fans of water sports. For wine lovers, this region is a paradise; it is becoming the leading wine producer of Portugal, and wine tourism is developing along the way. Don’t forget the food, so distinct from Northern Portugal, or the Atlantic beaches (Troia, Porto Covo, Milfontes…)

The low-density population also contributes to the meager prices of real estate. Many youngsters move to Lisbon or abroad, searching for jobs, which ensures that there is more supply than demand.

Finally, the region is quite close to Lisbon. A road trip from the Lisbon airport might take between half an hour and two hours, depending on where you stay. The region is connected to the capital by the A6 (Lisbon-Spain) and A2 (Lisbon-Algarve) highways. If you fancy a tour to neighboring Extremadura in Spain, couldn’t be easier.

Warm climate (similar to Algarve’s), excellent gastronomy, wines and landscapes, and all very inexpensive. Alentejo is a treasure waiting to be discovered.

HOW MUCH MONEY DO I NEED TO RETIRE IN PORTUGAL?

Portugal is Western European quality with South American prices.

The cost of living, overall, is lower than in the United States and other European countries. As the saying goes: Portugal is Western European quality with South American prices.

Real Estate

You’ll find a big difference in real estate prices between the big cities (Lisbon and Porto) and the countryside. The fast growth of tourism and second-home residency meant a steady price increase in these areas. Recent data shows that the square meter value is about USD $2,500 in Lisbon, but the national average is just $1,000.

A two-bedroom apartment could cost between $900 and $1,500/month, aside from both luxury developments and low end, suburban housing. In the countryside, the price could go from $350 to $600.

Monthly Budget

For $500, you can get your monthly groceries comfortably, for two people. This would include utilities: cable, internet and cell phone (around $45, without premium channels); power ($30 to $45); gas ($20 to $30) and water ($15 to $20). A liter of milk is $0,55; 1 kg of pork could come for less than $5. A coffee (Portuguese style, a tiny but powerful cup) is less than $1, just like a beer. The Big Mac menu is not as cheap as you would think (around $6).

A regular Portuguese restaurant gives you a complete meal for $15/person: appetizers, main dish, a bottle of wine, bread, dessert, and coffee.

Groceries and utilities don’t have the same variation between Lisbon or Porto and the countryside as real estate. However, you may conclude that settling in the countryside can be a little cheaper, regarding groceries too. In touristic places of Lisbon, a coffee can cost a little more than $1.10 – and most Portuguese feel that’s too high!

Lately, Portugal clothing market is being overrun by ultracheap products made in Bangladesh. You can get new t-shirts for $3, jeans for $12 and so on. Primark, the European low-cost retailer which has 9 locations in the Northeast, has 7 stores in Portugal alone.

Cars

European roads and streets are tight, and so are the average European cars. Aside from typical American brands with little world reach, like Dodge or Buick, you’ll find all sort of car brands for sale, and a big market for used cars too. A brand new BMW Series 1 is $30,000; the tiny Ford KA+ is only $11,000.

Mind that you’ll find the fuel prices surprisingly high. Gasoline has been floating between $1.40 and $1.70/liter ($4,20 and $4,84/gallon). This could be another reason to go for a smaller, cheaper car, which will need less fuel.

Aside from fuel, some expenses might surprise an American expat. Almost every highway has tolls; processed drinks suffer from a governmental tax to fight obesity. But, overall, the country is a good bargain. Remember that Lisbon, Porto and some Algarve areas (the most “touristic” ones) can be a little more expensive than the rest of the country; hence the opportunity of areas like Alentejo, Oeste and others.

DO YOU NEED A VISA TO RETIRE IN PORTUGAL?

Portugal is a member of the Schengen Area, a group of 26 European countries that abolished their internal borders, almost matching European Union. US citizens do not need to apply to a Schengen VISA to stay up to 90 days. To stay for longer, one should contact the Immigration service, SEF (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras), equivalent to the Department of Homeland Security.

Algarve, Portugal | Photo by Dan Gold on Unsplash

The route to citizenship

If you’re a regular, US-born citizen of no Portuguese descent, there are two ways to get Portuguese nationality: marrying a Portuguese national or living in Portugal.

In the first scenario, you’ll need to be married for three years or longer. Cohabitation for the same period is also valid, although a Portuguese court should recognize it.

In the second, you’ll need to live in Portugal for six or more years permanently. You will also need to complete a written test certifying that you have sufficient control of the Portuguese language.

Obviously, there are some other requirements to apply for Portuguese nationality. The candidate must be at least 18 years old, not having been sentenced for a crime in Portugal punishable with 3 or more years in prison, and not having been involved in terrorist activities.

How to qualify for residency

You can ask for a residence visa (visto de residência), allowing you to stay up to four months, or two kinds of “normal”, “regular” residence permits:

Temporary (autorização de residência temporária, ART), valid for one year, renewable for two;

Permanent (autorização de residência permanente, ARP), renewable after five years or whenever a change occurs in its data.

Family reunions, working, access to the legal system and access to healthcare are some of the rights granted to permanent residents.

SEF will ask you for several documents when you apply to a residence permit. You should schedule a meeting with them beforehand, to avoid queues in the regular service.

Special residency permit #1: Non-Habitual Residency

Aside from the “regular” residency permits, there is a very special one: the non-habitual residency permit (Residente Não Habitual, RNH). The RNH allows foreign citizens to change their tax address to Portugal and get benefits from it.

Photo by Oleksandr Kurchev on Unsplasht

Through this scheme, if you’re retired, your foreign-based pensions, received in Portugal, will be exempt from taxes.

To apply to the RNH, you cannot have lived in Portugal in the previous five years. One should be willing to stay in Portugal for at least 183 days per year or to own a house, demonstrating he can live in Portugal permanently.

The RNH permit has granted Portugal some criticism from its European Union partners. Some call it an “offshore for people”, like the offshore tax havens for financial movements and capital. Sweden and Finland, two Nordic countries with stringent rules regarding fiscal policy, have denounced their treaties with Portugal regarding double taxation. Due to the RNH, they discovered that their nationals were paying no taxes on their pensions; exempt at home due to the treaty, exempt in Portugal via RNH status.

While climate, security and lower prices are the factors that people usually use to explain the success of the retirement market in Portugal during the last ten years, the RNH is the unsung hero of this success. The program appeared in 2009, and there are currently 30,000 foreign, “non-habitual residents”.

Curious coincidence: in Portugal, the income tax on individuals it’s called IRS (Imposto sobre os Rendimentos das pessoas Singulares). Make no confusion with the American IRS; the Portuguese revenue service it is called Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira, or Finanças (Finances) in everyday language (pronunce like “fee-nan-sas”).

Special residency permit #2: The Golden Visa

The Golden Visa is a residency permit given to people investing at least €500,000 in real estate in Portugal.

The official name is “Residency Permit for Investment Activity” (Autorização de Residência para Atividade de Investimento, ARI). The candidate will be allowed to enter in Portugal without a residency visa, circulate in the Schengen Area and bring the family. He could also apply to a permanent residency permit or Portuguese nationality, according to the law. You should be in Portugal 7 days per year in the first year of permit and 14 days per year subsequently.

There are other ways to invest through ARI, like capital transfer of $1,000,000, or creating a minimum of 10 jobs in Portugal. But investing in real estate is by far the most chosen way by candidates. Chinese are the most frequent candidates to Portuguese Golden Visas.

Legal system

Once you get a residency permit, you’ll have the same legal rights as a Portuguese citizen. Portugal is a fully-fledged democracy and a member of the European Union, based on the principles of the rule of law, civil liberties and Human Rights. You will feel no particular problems regarding this.

The Portuguese legal system, as the whole Continental Europe, follows the Roman Law tradition, falling in the Civil Law system, unlike the Common Law followed in America. However, and apart from the almost inexistent role of a jury, these differences are mostly felt by lawyers, rather than by citizens seeking justice. You’ll always have the right to an attorney.

IS REAL ESTATE EXPENSIVE IN PORTUGAL?

As we mentioned above, the local property market displays a significant value difference between Lisbon (and also Porto) and the rest of the country. Throughout the country, you’ll find that there is way more offer to buy than to rent. The current macroeconomic policy of the European Central Bank is stimulating owners and developers to sell.

Photo by roya ann miller on Unsplash

Choosing a real estate agency (or agent) is the first step to find a property. You could buy or rent on your own, but a good agent has the local knowledge of the market (and regulations) that a foreigner lacks. There is no difference between agents, brokers, or realtors; you’ll find a single category of real estate companies, which can have a single agent or a team.

Beware of non-licensed agents; always check if they have an official AMI number with the APEMIP, the Portuguese NAR. Remax, ERA, and Century21 are in the market.

If you’re thinking about a long-term investment, buying will be wiser. Ask your agent for advice, but don’t forget to check online for properties yourself in web portals like Casa Sapo, Imovirtual, Idealista, and OLX (a Craigslist-like portal present in 45 countries). Portals show both properties to rent and to buy.

HOW MUCH DOES HEALTH INSURANCE COST?

The Portuguese government maintains a public, national Health Service, in line with the European welfare tradition regarding this matter. The service is free; aside from minor taxes, which one can pay for consults or Urgency services (never above $22). Even major surgeries are free!

Once you have a residence permit, you can benefit from the service like a national. To register, US citizens need a document of the Immigration Service (SEF) and show it in their local Family Health Unit (USF). As the service is free, it is recommended that you sign up. It’s a cheap way to keep an eye on your general health and perform regular clinical pathology tests.

However, the public system has its flaws and limitations (efficiency, budget, etc.). You may find that your local USF (“Family Health Unit”, a local government-owned medical facility for basic care) is too crowded. MRIs’ and CT scans are very hard to get. You may need dental medicine, a specialty almost nonexistent in the public service. Or maybe you need a specialty that your local hospital is not providing.

This is especially true in Algarve. In spite of being a significant tourist and second-home market, Algarve still lacks a large, central, and well-provided public hospital like the ones of Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra.

Private services are the alternative. Portugal is going through a period of expansion of private hospitals and insurance. You’ll find both domestic and well-known international insurers, like Allianz and Zurich, in the market. You may get partial insurance (for dental medicine, vision, and or other specialties lacking in the public system) or full coverage. Check the terms and conditions carefully, as rates may increase after a certain age.

The rates can vary wildly. Even searching online, you may find it difficult to get accurate prices before filling a questionnaire. An alternative is to look for help, like the one provided by AFPOP – Portugal Foreign Residents Association, which can get you advice and discounts. AFPOP members affirm they can get full coverage (with an international insurer) for about $660/year.

Elderly care services are also booming, in line with the aging trend of the Portuguese population. It is possible to find full-time (24 hours/day) home support (including hygiene and accompanying) from $880/month; a good elderly home, with more customized service, would start from $1,100. There is plenty of offer below these prices, but usually, it relies on unlicensed professionals.

WHAT ARE TAXES LIKE FOR RETIREES?

The taxes you’ll be responsible for will depend on the kind of investment you make in the country. As discussed above, by getting a non-habitual residency permit (RNH), you may get a flat tax fee or an exemption. The personal income tax is called IRS (it’s the “coincidence,” allowing confusion with the American IRS, also discussed above).

Portuguese banking technology levels are state-of-the-art. You can open a bank account online: fill your personal data and then go to the nearest branch just to confirm and sign. Some banks might allow you to do everything online. Eventually, you’ll find out that most Portuguese still don’t use this kind of accounts. But that is due to the usual reasons for people using what they already know. 100% online banking is used by millennials, executives, urbanites, and other early-adopters.

If you buy a house, you’ll need to pay a yearly property tax (IMI, Imposto Municipal sobre Imóveis). It is decided at a local level, by the municipalities (Câmara Municipal), but payment is made to the tax authority (Autoridade Tributária). It varies between 0.30% and 0.45% of the amount that the tax authority considers your property is worth (something you can contest if you find it too high).

If you buy a car, you’ll have to pay the yearly IUC (Imposto Único de Circulação), calculated by the tax authority according to the value and capabilities of it.

If you set up a company in Portugal, you’ll pay corporate tax (IRC, Imposto sobre o Rendimento das Pessoas Coletivas). Apart from some exceptions, most companies pay 23.5% (including a municipal corporate tax, usually of 1.5%)

Portugal is not the most competitive country in terms of taxes (unless you get the non-habitual residency permit, as we made clear.) Due to the 2011 bailout, amid the Great Recession and the Eurozone crisis, the country has had to apply a hefty dose of taxation on economic activities, especially on consumption. That’s why fuel seems so expensive, compared with the US. Portugal’s VAT or sales tax (named “IVA”) is 23%, which is above the EU average (although several exemptions goods have reduced IVA).

But taxes on consumption are not felt by the user unless the end price gets too high. And, as we mentioned above, Portugal is the cheapest country in Western Europe – even with high consumption taxation.

The main tax tip is to apply to the non-habitual residency permit. While buying a house, you could check the IMI (property tax) collected by the municipality where you’re buying, although the tax rates end up being very similar throughout the country, as we said above.

Funny note: the Portuguese word for tax is “imposto,” which also means “imposed.” It reveals the nature of it – no one would pay voluntarily; taxes must be “imposed.”

HOW SAFE IS PORTUGAL?

According to the Global Peace Index, Portugal is one of the five most peaceful countries in the World. The World Economic Forum ranks it as the 9th safest country, according to its Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2019. InterNations, the world expat community, developed a 20.000 people (more than 170 countries and nationalities) survey which deemed Portugal as the 8th safest country.

If you move to Portugal, learn to read Portuguese and start reading newspapers in cafes, you’ll find the omnipresent “Correio da Manhã,” the national sensationalist tabloid. Every day there is crime news – which is inevitable because, in a country of 10 million inhabitants, crimes are happening every day. But you’ll quickly find that the country is as safe as it looks. No mass shootings. No police officers dead in the line of duty.

The problematic areas are the impoverished suburbs of Lisbon, which foreigners should avoid – not much to do or see there, anyway. The same happens in Porto, on a smaller scale. In downtown Lisbon, crowded with tourists, beware with pickpocketing.

Elsewhere in the country, follow general rules of common sense. Avoid to exhibit wealth and close the door. Get involved with the local community (face to face and social media) so that you can stay about local precautions (for instance, if a group of bandits keeps invading homes before they’re caught).

HOW EASY IS IT TO GET AROUND?

Local infrastructure is more developed than one would think. Membership of the European Union allowed Portuguese authorities (both at a central and local level) to improve roads and other public structures; there is no shortage of public water supply, electricity, or mobile network throughout the country (especially around the metropolitan areas and Algarve). Portugal has one of the best highway networks in Europe; however, as lovely as Lisbon’s trams are, in general train transportation is below average compared to the rest of Europe.

Driving is smooth throughout the country. Traffic jams in Lisbon are necessarily small, compared with what happens in large American cities. Portuguese drivers are a little more polite in the North than in Lisbon, but general adherence to the rules has improved over the years (and road mortality decreased).

American driver’s licenses are valid for six months. After that, you should exchange for a Portuguese one at IMT, the Portuguese DMV. It won’t be necessary to do a new driving exam, just the usual bureaucracy.

WHAT RECREATION DOES PORTUGAL OFFER?

Leisure and activities can be quite different between big cities and the countryside. In Lisbon and Porto you could expect to find everything you would in a big world city. If you’re all for sports (watching or practicing), you should try to enjoy soccer and visit the 50,000 seat stadiums of the nation’s larger clubs.

You could also practice every kind of sport, from go-karting to surf. In the countryside, there are apparently fewer options, but in most municipalities, you can find a public swimming pool, buy a good bike for cheap or get mates for traditional games (cards and others).

HOW CAN I SHIP MY STUFF?

Regarding your personal goods, several companies can serve you (sometimes involving a shipment to the Netherlands and then a truck transport to Portugal). But depending on your needs, you might consider making an investment locally, as it could end up being both cheaper and easier. For furniture, for example, there are 5 IKEA stores in Portugal (2 in Lisbon, 2 in the North and 1 in Algarve).

TAP Air Portugal and Azores Airlines are both members of the IATA (International Air Transport Association), like most American companies. The main rules regarding pet shipping are the ones designed by the IATA, as the standard of international aviation. You should check each company specific conditions (prices, guidelines, etc.).

ARE THERE RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES IN PORTUGAL?

Yes, and the Portuguese are naturally welcoming of foreigners. As in every country, you’ll seldom find (in the local media) social or political negative references to immigration. (Although way less intense than in other European countries, as immigration from Africa is not that influent, and from the Middle East is non-existent). For expats coming from Northern Europe and North America, nothing of this applies. People are aware that foreigners from these countries are there to enjoy the country. They are universally welcomed.

You won’t have much trouble getting by in English. Keep in mind that the percentage of people able to communicate in English is lower outside Lisbon, Porto, and Algarve (and especially in rural areas). It is also lower with people above 50 years old. But if you find youngsters, it should be easier.

The Portuguese appreciate expats, and you can find English speakers everywhere. In fact, Portuguese prefer to watch American movies with subtitles, rather than dubbed . It has been like this ever since TV transmissions started. Aside from school, this also helps the country to have a higher understanding of English than others, namely Spain.

The most efficient way to find expats it’s still the internet. US communities are too small to gather in dedicated social clubs; only the British do that, and only in Algarve. However, the “best” way (even if not the efficientest) is going around the most frequented restaurants, cafes, and pubs. Foreigners tend to go to similar places – genuine, traditional Portuguese restaurants of good quality.

FINAL THOUGHTS

In terms of finding a place to retire, it doesn’t get a whole lot better than Portugal.

The health care system is top-notch, the people are friendly, the food is wonderful, and there is no shortage of places to explore. Plus, the cost of living is low, and the non-habitual residency permit is one of the most generous legal tax loopholes in the world. The Portuguese are accomodating and want you to know you are welcome. Will you join them?
