Hello all,
I just thought I'd add my ha'penny's worth:
As someone with English as my first language; I found it quite tough to even get to practice any Danish (I had mastered) as everybody immediately recognised my English accent and wanted to practice their English (it's widely spoken here) or maybe they just wanted to be helpful?
In any case, I didn't find it at all difficult to get to know the Danes. In fact so much so that I am now permanently settled here.

Great read! I’m an American expat living in a Denmark, and I have to say that after spending 3 years here, I see Denmark much differently than this. Perhaps, it is my location, family experience and age. I found it interesting to read your opinions, though! Makes me wonder how different it would’ve been if I were single, younger and living in a big city! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Efralene,

Thanks for reading! I understand how it feels, I was only 21 when I moved to Denmark and believe me, I thought I was scared that I thought my heart will stop beating! HA!

Regarding your question, you should find a host family before going to Denmark, you can do it online or join Facebook groups. No need to have an experience, remember, this will be a cultural program scheme and not a job.

You can find more info here:

Hi Mary! Thank you for posting this article, it helps a lot.

Actually I am working here in the UAE right now and I have been planning to go to a different country for work and travel purposes but I can't decide if which country to go. I am also nervous to leave because going to a new place wherein you don't know anyone is kinda scary specially for ladies, starting anew also.

I have a lot of questions on my mind right now but I don't know how to manage them right now. Please bear with me. Thank you.

*To become AU Pair in Denmark, how can we find a host family, can we find a host family even if we are in a different place/country? Or should we go to Denmark first and find a host family?
Do we need experience to become an AU Pair?

This is my first time knowing about AU Pair and I am really interested in it. I hope you can help me more about this. Thank you so much for your help.

In reply to <a href="https://amaryroad.com/expat-in-denmark-ultimate-guide/comment-page-1#comment-2150">Joe</a>.

Hey Joe!

Thanks for dropping by! I have to say that I had a hard start making friends in Denmark. Although, I wouldn't say they are unfriendly. They do have a cold culture, but this doesn't mean they wouldn't want to be friends with you. What I learnt is that, when you started to have a good friendship with a Dane, you know you will have him/her as your really good friend for a long time (even without communication for a while). However, it will take some effort from your side to earn their trust.

Coming from a very warm culture, when I was in Denmark, I felt like I was too friendly whilst Danes are very private. They value their personal space which you should keep in mind.

If you are moving there as a student, hang out at the uni Friday bars, it's a great way to meet outgoing Danes. Whilst, you should also join a local & expat group meetups like what I did!

Hope you will a great time there, I really enjoyed my 2 years in Denmark and still considering it a place to settle one day!

Hi Mary, great article.

I am considering to move there as well, but I have read some worrying stories of how Danes are one of the most unfriendliest people in the world.

It seems that it is hard to make friends there, and thus quite challenging to integrate.

As a fellow South East Asian, can you give any further insight on ur experience?

Thx! :)
