If you are just about to embark on your travel or you have been wandering on the road for quite some time now, these no BS best travel hacks will be useful for you. I have only been travelling for a year now and I’m pretty sure there are still heaps of things to learn. Yet, throughout my year-long travel, I’ve come to realised how unprepared I was when I first embarked on my trip, which is, of course acceptable, although I could have saved tonnes of money and time if I was aware of these!

No BS Best Travel Hacks All Travellers Should Know

Keep a digital and printed copy of your passport and identity cards

Make sure you have a soft and hard copy of your passport and other identity cards. This will help you when a hostel ask for you passport as a deposit, especially if you don’t feel comfortable to leave your passport with them. When you lost your passport, having a soft or printed copy will make your journey with the embassy a lot easier.

Stash some cash

The old and number one rule when travelling to a foreign country, always stash some extra cash (USD, Euros, and Pounds would be the best currency to have). In case the ATM machine doesn’t work, you lose your card or you get lost in the middle of nowhere. I personally keep at least 100USD for these emergency situations.

Download Maps.Me

A traveller told me to download this offline map, it’s one fo the best travel hack I learnt. You can easily download your next location so it will be available offline. When you finished travelling there, you can easily delete the offline map for that specific location.

Use an ATM to get money at the airport

Research in advance the biggest bank in your destination, normally, they have a quite fair exchange rate. This is a lot better than using your stash cash to exchange in the airport itself. Those exchange windows have bad rate most of the time.

Take at least two credit/debit Cards

Take at least two credit/debit cards in case one of them doesn’t work or got stolen. Never ever place them together. You will be surprised how many travellers are travelling with the only one credit card. Losing your one and only card will take you to painful long hours of a phone call to your bank or parents to save your ass. Instead of enjoying your trip, this will cause a lot of stress which will definitely ruin your travel.

A pro tip while traveling is to carry at least one travel rewards credit card. These types of credit cards allow you rack up rewards while traveling and you can earn free flights or hotel stays! Be sure to choose the type of rewards card that best suits your travel style.

Travel with a medium sized backpack

I personally travel with 35L backpack whilst my front one is around 15L. In total, I have roughly 14 kilogrammes together. My big backpack has a perfect size for a cabin luggage which saves me a lot of money from not paying a check-in luggage fee. This also made me comfortable that I have all my belongings with me and not left somewhere thousands of miles away because the airline made a mistake.

Pack a light-weight large scarf

Packing a scarf is the ultimate travel accessories of all time and the best travel hacks all travellers should know. This is great when you need to cover up when visiting sacred places, a blanket when needed, shield against the sun, substitute for a towel, a curtain for your dorm bed, or and even to wrap up your dirty or wet clothes when there is no bag available.

Bring a padlock

Always, always bring a padlock. Not all dorm rooms offer a locker that doesn’t require a lock. Pick a medium-sized one that would fit all kind of locks and that is not heavy. It would be smart to spend a little money buying a good and reliable padlock.

Keep your cash in your tampon box/pads

If you have no option to lock up your cash in a locker, try to hide them in between your tampon box or pad’s pouch. Although this is not the smartest idea, this could save you when there’s no way to keep your money or other small valuable safe.

Pack a pair of underwear in your hand carry

If your check-in luggage was left behind by mistake, packing an extra underwear in your hand luggage will definitely the one and only thing that will make you happy when you get to that situation. An airline left my luggage once, I had to buy new underwear and spent an unexpected amount of money.

Don’t forget pocket binoculars

Pick pocket-sized binoculars, you will be very happy that you pack one. This will not only come in handy when you go on a good hike. Even your are on a city tour, a binocular will still be useful. Just remember to get a small and lightweight one, especially if you don’t have a lot of space in your backpack.

Take a bathroom break before you land

Around 20 minutes before you land, take a bathroom break. This saves you a lot of time instead of battling on the arrival bathroom. I learned this one of the best travel hacks from a traveller I met on a flight to Bangkok.
