I was not born with lust for travel, I never craved to see the world. When I left the Philippines in 2013, I was 21. I was fresh graduate from College and I didn't enjoy my job that time, so I escaped. I moved to Denmark, this is where I realised my capabilities in things I can do in my life at the very young age. I never imagined that one tiny decision will turn my life upside down and drive my family crazy.
That decision of leaving the Philippines and not coming back was truly liberating. I can't really explain now why I chose to travel, all I know is that decision lead me in finding myself standing in front of a hostel with my whole life packed in two backpacks, a tattoo on my wrist, broke, jobless, but feeling so excited and confident about myself.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
WHY ARE YOU TRAVELLING?
I don't know actually, I’m not sure why I’m travelling anymore. In the beginning, I thought because I want to be free, or see the world, or to move as far as possible from home, or be crazy. I never find the answer what fuel my desire to travel. But I like the feeling of being in a place where no one knows me and I don't understand what the people around me are saying. I feel so invisible, it feels great.
Someone asked me, would you still consider yourself travelling if you are in the same place for more than a month? I don’t know, people travel in their own way. I travel quite slow, I stayed in some places for more than a month, some for a few weeks. Sometimes, I’d like to think I’m not actually travelling. I’m just homeless, enjoying to call everywhere my home, most of the time.
WHAT MAKES YOU CHOOSE THIS LIFESTYLE?
I like being on time yet love the adrenaline of running late and the scene of being lost. I hate when things don’t get into my plan yet I can’t deny learning from the unexpected event is relishing for me. Travelling put me in those situations all the time. Another thing I love about my lifestyle at the moment is the freedom, it’s amazing how much freedom I have. How I am in-charge of what will happen tomorrow, well sort of. The freedom of I can travel on my own way, my own pace.
HOW DID YOU START TRAVELLING?
In 2013, after receiving my most awaited diploma, being a Degree holder and getting a job right away (in the Philippines), I decided to move to Denmark instead, where I found myself daydreaming of travelling for long-term. I left Denmark at the end of 2015 and flew to Southeast Asia for a full-time travelling, since then, I haven't stopped.
WHAT IS THIS BLOG ABOUT
This is mostly about my thoughts, things I have come to realised as I grow whilst travelling. If you read my life and stories articles, you will see how I like writing about my thoughts and opinions about different topics and maybe how stupid I am.
I also write about information that I think some readers and travellers will find useful, like visa guides, land border crossings, stories of travellers I find really admiring, mishap during my trips, and some tips on how to fund your travels.
I also support an animal shelter in Thailand, if you are looking to adopt a dog or a cat or do something to benefit someone else other than yourself as you travel, you can volunteer in the sanctuary too.
WHERE ARE YOU RIGHT NOW?
At the moment, I am exploring the Philippines. I don't update this section as often as I want to, but you can check my homepage to see where I am located exactly or my social media accounts.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN EARTH?
I always say I don't have a favourite place and that's true. I loved and enjoyed every destinations I have been even though there are painful and loads of mishaps happened in a certain place whilst I was travelling or living there. But if I truly answer this question, my favourite place in earth is the Animal Sanctuary in Thailand. I never thought I have a big heart for the animals, but I do. I didn't want to leave the sanctuary but I had to, but if one day, I find myself very lost, I think you will find me there, with all the dogs and cats who needed love they deserve.
Mary is originally from Quezon City, Philippines. She moved to Denmark at the age of 21. She never really quit her job to travel the world, she simply stumbled on the idea and found her way to make it possible. Mary mostly travel alone but enjoy the company of amazing travellers she meet on the road. She's an avid fan of English medieval novels, especially about the Tudor dynasty.
Mary is a TEFL certified as well and even English is one of the main languages in the Philippines, you will find grammatical errors throughout this blog and that's a warning 🙂
